The story reunites the entire cast from the series, picking up right after the season four cliffhanger. Jarod, Michael T. Weiss, along with Ethan and Miss Parker, is alive after the bomb on the train, and Jarod is now posing as an agent for the National Security Agency, part of a task force determined to track down the elusive “Chameleon,” a killer who embodies all the adaptive traits of a Pretender.

The Centre is forced to pause its Hunt for Jarod when its administrator, Harve Presnell as Mr. Parker, is abducted. Miss Parker discovers that Richard Marcus as William Raines is still alive, despite being allegedly killed by her father. Her brother, James Denton as Mr. Lyle, tries to finish Raines off, but Miss Parker manages to spirit him away and hide him in her house. In return, Raines agrees to shed light on who might have kidnapped her father.

Jarod begins receiving taunting clues from the Chameleon, leading him to believe the killer bears a personal grudge against him. This revelation takes Jarod back to the days before his escape from the Centre; he hatched a plan with two fellow Pretenders, including a man named Alex, played by Peter Outerbridge. Alex was captured during their escape and endured horrific torture by his captors; now he seeks revenge on Jarod. From his perspective, Alex found his own family and murdered them, claiming this freed him from the Centre’s control, yet he remains unsatisfied and kidnaps Mr. Parker with the intent to kill him.

After incriminating evidence points to Jarod, his NSA colleagues suspect him of being the Chameleon. The Centre’s programmer, Jon Gries as Broots, is swept up in the NSA investigation and pulled into an interrogation room. Jarod instantly recognizes Broots, but chooses to cover for him rather than risk exposing them both. As Jarod escorts Broots out of the NSA building, Jarod’s partners move in to arrest them both. Jarod flees in a vehicle with Broots in tow, then later abandons him by the roadside.

In the climactic sequence, Jarod thwarts Alex’s next assassination and helps free Mr. Parker. Before Alex commits suicide, he taunts that the truth of Jarod’s real identity will die with him. Mr. Parker is injured during the struggle and rendered catatonic. As Jarod and Miss Parker speak on the phone, both receive an anonymous email containing an image of two women—the mothers of Miss Parker and Jarod—standing together. The email is revealed to have been sent by Richard Marcus himself, apparently as a show of thanks for rescuing him.
