In the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, a group of fishermen come to the aid of an American man, found drifting with two gunshot wounds in his back. Despite his perilous condition, they discover he is devoid of any memory regarding his identity. Yet, he retains his articulate speech, remarkable combat skills, and mastery over multiple languages. The skipper, Giancarlo, stumbles upon a laser projector hidden on the man, which reveals a code that leads to a safe deposit box in Zurich. With a bit of cash left by the skipper, the American makes his way to Switzerland two weeks later, where he uncovers a mysterious deposit filled with various currencies, passports bearing his likeness, and a handgun. He decides to assume the identity of Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), the name found on one of the passports.
However, unbeknownst to Bourne, his departure does not go unnoticed. A bank employee tips off Operation Treadstone, a classified CIA black ops initiative. The program’s overseer, Conklin, promptly instructs law enforcement to track down Bourne and activates three agents, including Castel, Manheim, and the Professor, to ensure Bourne’s elimination. In a twist of fate, we learn that Bourne was an agent for Treadstone who had previously failed in a mission pertaining to Wombosi (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), an exiled African dictator threatening to expose CIA operations in Africa unless reinstated.
As Bourne attempts to evade the Swiss police, he seeks refuge in the American consulate, only to be pursued by Marine guards. In a desperate move, he enlists the help of a German woman, Marie Kreutz, offering her $20,000 to drive him to an address in Paris, which he discovered on his French driving license. At this location, he contacts a hotel linked to his other identity, uncovering the tragic fate of John Michael Kane, who died shortly after registering there in a car crash. As tension escalates, Bourne faces ambush from Castel. Instead of facing interrogation, Castel leaps to his demise, leaving Bourne and Marie bewildered but united in their plight.
Hunted by authorities, Bourne and Marie spend the night in a Paris hotel, while Wombosi grows increasingly paranoid about the failed assassination attempt against him. Anticipating Wombosi’s retaliation, Conklin stages a cover-up, but the dictator is not deceived. As Bourne delves deeper into his tangled past, he finds a connection to Wombosi’s luxurious yacht, ultimately learning that he was the intended assassin who couldn’t go through with the murder due to the presence of Wombosi’s children.
During their journey together, Bourne and Marie uncover a connection to the agency, which leads to dangerous confrontations and revelations. After a harrowing exchange with Conklin at Treadstone’s safe house, Bourne ultimately decides to sever ties with the CIA, declaring, “Who am I?” to which Conklin chillingly responds, “You’re U.S. government property. You’re a malfunctioning $30 million weapon!”
As agents close in, Bourne battles to escape his tumultuous past. Following Conklin’s demise, the CIA is forced to retract Treadstone, shifting focus towards a new operation known as “Blackbriar.” In a compelling finale, Bourne finds solace in reconnecting with Marie, who is managing a scooter rental on the island of Mykonos, allowing the two to share a moment of peace amidst chaos.
