An Affair to Die For

Russell orchestrates the entire setup as revenge for his wife Holly's affair with Everett. Russell manipulates both victims by making them believe he is holding his wife Lydia and daughter Jessica captive, when in reality Lydia is his partner in the scheme. The elaborate ruse serves to punish both Holly for her infidelity and Everett for his involvement with her.

Lydia and Jessica are not actually captive at all. Russell's claim that he is holding his own wife and daughter hostage is a manipulation tactic to control Everett.
