Saroja is the eldest daughter of Parvathy, a single mother who struggles to make ends meet. Alagappan, their neighbor and a drama writer, harbors a quiet affection for Saroja while secretly stealing money and blaming his innocent father. The family’s precarious financial situation and neighborhood dynamics set the stage for what follows.

Murthy, from a wealthy family and engaged to his cousin Selvi, is drawn to Saroja after a few encounters. Alagappan mistakenly reads this as Saroja returning his feelings and begins to feel threatened.

Murthy befriends Kaliyannan and joins Alagappan's drama troupe to spend more time with Saroja. This move deepens the bond between Murthy and Saroja while pulling Alagappan closer to the situation.

On a school trip to Ooty funded by Alagappan, Saroja travels with her classmates while Murthy outfits Alagappan in modern clothes. Alagappan secretly shadows the trip and discovers that Saroja and Murthy are in love.

A school strike brings Saroja home early, where she stumbles upon Parvathy in a compromising arrangement with the cloth store owner who had been supporting them. Parvathy explains she did it for the children's sake, despite it going against her conscience.

Saroja urges her mother to sever ties with the store owner and decides to discontinue her own studies to work for the family. She also cuts back on meeting Murthy to focus on their survival.

Murthy's father refuses to accept his relationship with Saroja, creating a rift between them. Murthy's cousin Selvi, rejected by him, takes her own life, leaving Murthy unable to return home and facing worsening finances.

Despite the hardship, Murthy stays with Saroja's family while they struggle to find work. Alagappan hatches a plan to raise funds by marrying a woman for her dowry, hoping to obtain Rs 2000 to support them. The money is lost and his mother disowns him for the deceit.

The cloth store owner offers financial help for Babu’s medical emergency, but Saroja declines. Babu dies, and poverty tightens its grip on the family as the younger sibling resorts to stealing bread to survive.

Parvathy begs the store owner for help, but he coldly refuses and suggests that one of Parvathy's daughters accompany him in exchange for money. The family is shocked by the callous proposition.

Saroja's younger sister contemplates sacrificing her dignity to feed the family, but Saroja refuses to compromise her values. In a drastic move, Saroja buys jangiri laced with poison and serves them to the family.

Murthy finally sees Alagappan with his toddler stepdaughter, reminding him of the sacrifices made for Saroja's family. After Murthy and Saroja marry, they also consume the poisoned sweets, and the next morning the neighborhood mourns while debts remain unpaid.
