Saroja is a high school student and the eldest daughter who shoulders her family's burden. She falls in love with Murthy and navigates the complex web of affection around her, while resisting Alagappan’s misguided advances. Parvathy is a single mother who works as a tailor to provide for her four children, relying on help from a cloth store owner. Alagappan is a drama writer neighbor who harbors affection for Saroja. He steals money and blames others, and schemes to help Saroja by exploiting dowry practices. His actions bring further trouble to the family, and his mother disowns him after his deception is revealed.

Murthy comes from a wealthy family and is engaged to his cousin Selvi, but falls in love with Saroja. He befriends Kaliyannan and supports Saroja through her family’s hardships, choosing loyalty over privilege. His decisions sustain the romance and contribute to the tragedy that follows.
