Sol Goode Balthazar Getty is a well-intentioned yet carefree and freeloading slacker living in Los Angeles. On the cusp of his thirties, he dreams of breaking into big acting breaks in Hollywood, but meaningful opportunities remain elusive. Beyond his acting ambitions, Sol’s vibrant social life has earned him a measure of fame among men and a notorious reputation among women in LA for his extravagant parties and late-night, habit-forming one-night stands. He shares an uptown bungalow with his roommate, Justin [Jamie Kennedy], and his circle includes a responsible, hardworking friend named Cooper [Danny Comden], a charismatic playboy named Happy [Johnathon Schaech], Sol’s laid-back and occasionally visiting cowboy cousin Murphy [Max Perlich] with a generous endowment, and Chloe [Katharine Towne], his closest female friend who juggles waitressing with college.

After a one-night stand with Tammy [Tori Spelling], Sol discovers he has run out of money to cover his share of the rent, and Justin has to remind him that he needs to grow up. A visit to his parents becomes a sobering moment, as Sol’s dad [Robert Wagner] and mom [Christina Pickles] insist on a sit-down talk about his lack of responsibility and his refusal to rely on them for rent money. At work, Justin is singled out for a promotion from the mailroom to the assistant of Bernie Best [Cheri Oteri], a bossy, sharp-tongued Hollywood agent, while Sol watches from the sidelines as his world of casual living spirals.

When Happy arrives in town, Sol learns that Happy’s time off is due to him and his partner taking a break from their relationship, a phenomenon Sol calls a “hall pass.” The agent wastes no time and signs Happy for a Levi’s Jeans commercial, effectively sidelining Sol behind the scenes. With rent overdue, eviction looming, and his car towed away, Sol tries to salvage some dignity by pursuing another one-night stand, but circumstances force him to rely on Tammy once more. A public night out soon reveals more about Sol’s friends and their loyalties: Chloe is seen sharing drinks with Happy on a date, while Justin’s own romantic entanglement with Brenda becomes a focal point of tension and humor within the group.

Brenda [Natasha Gregson Wagner] makes it clear that she wants Justin to move in with her, pressing him to choose between his friends and her. The morning after, Tammy confronts Sol about how she’s treated as nothing more than a casual option and pushes him to take her out on a proper date. Sol, unable to hide his mounting frustration, tries to arrange a quiet dinner in a less conspicuous venue, but Tammy’s promotor duties at a Red Bull event and a chance encounter with someone Sol knows in the crowd complicate the plan. The date ends awkwardly, and Tammy indicates she wants something more than a purely physical connection, while Sol remains uncertain about how to proceed.

Back at the hangout, Sol confronts the evolving dynamics around Chloe and Happy. He senses that his feelings for Chloe go beyond friendship, but Chloe’s response is cautious, given she’s still involved with Happy and unsure of their future. Justin, meanwhile, finds his footing by standing up to Bernie, who reveals that the abusive tasks and hazing were meant as a test—one he passes. Even as he earns a potential promotion, Justin decides he’s had enough of the corporate hazing and resigns, choosing his independence and his friends over climbing the ladder.

The next day, Justin tells Sol that he’s back to his old self and that the two will continue to share a place for the foreseeable future. Sol finally accepts the more practical path his life is taking: he takes up umpiring as a day job, a nod to his family tradition. After successfully refereeing a youth softball game, the Goode family passes down a golden cup protector—their heirloom—as a symbol of maturity and responsibility. Chloe appears on the field to share a quiet moment with Sol, and the pair retreat to Sol’s bedroom the following morning. The moment is playful and intimate, as Chloe reveals she was merely teasing when she suggested a post-coital departure, leaving Sol to wonder about what comes next but confident in the possibility of something real between them.
