Wanderlust

George, portrayed by Paul Rudd, and Linda, played by Jennifer Aniston, are a married couple navigating the challenges of urban living in New York City. After considerable deliberation, they purchase a chic micro-loft, with George looking forward to an impending promotion while Linda aims to pitch her documentary to HBO. However, their excitement quickly turns to despair when George’s company unexpectedly goes bankrupt, and Linda’s project is rejected. Facing unemployment, they reluctantly decide to sell their apartment and move to Atlanta, Georgia, to stay with George’s self-important brother, Rick.

Their road trip takes a surprising turn when they stop at a quirky bed and breakfast called Elysium, only to be greeted by the unexpected sight of a naked man, Wayne Davidson, played by Joe Lo Truglio. This comical mishap leads to their car flipping over, leaving them no choice but to stay the night. As they settle in, they discover that Elysium is not just a bed and breakfast; it’s a vibrant hippie commune brimming with philosophy, joy, and an unorthodox lifestyle. They meet several eccentric residents, including the enigmatic Seth, portrayed by Justin Theroux, the free-spirited Eva, played by Malin Åkerman, and the wise owner, Carvin, portrayed by Alan Alda.

The couple’s initial night at Elysium revitalizes them, but they soon head to Rick’s house, where the atmosphere is far from uplifting. Rick’s abrasive nature and Marisa’s wild antics leave George feeling stifled. Eventually, they return to Elysium, where George is enchanted by the laid-back lifestyle, but Linda finds herself grappling with its implications, particularly when confronted with the commune’s free love doctrine, spearheaded by Seth and Eva who aim to seduce them.

As the tension mounts, property developers threaten Elysium’s existence, planning to demolish it for a casino. In a daring display of courage, Linda becomes a community hero by scaring off the workers. However, the strain on their relationship becomes palpable when George insists on leaving, fearing they might succumb to the chaos of ‘free love.’ Linda’s unexpected choice to engage with Seth leaves George feeling abandoned, culminating in a fierce showdown when he finally realizes he cannot bear to leave her behind.

In a twist of fate, chaos ensues as Seth sells the land’s deed to the developers, leading to confrontation and a fierce battle for love and home. George’s resolve strengthens, and as he returns to Elysium, he grapples with his feelings for Linda amidst the disarray. The fallout from these events is captured by a news crew, leading to unexpected success for George and Linda as they launch a publishing venture, debuting with Wayne’s political thriller, which eventually nets a film adaptation with Ray Liotta in a starring role. Ultimately, they help restore Elysium’s rightful ownership, bringing a sense of triumph and renewal to both their lives and the community they have come to cherish.
