What Happens in Saathi: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Saathi (1968) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Dr. Ravi, Rajendra Kumar, returns from abroad and takes up the position of chief surgeon at a hospital. He meets Nurse Shanti, Vyjayanthimala, who lives a life of poverty with her ailing mother, and, moved by her condition, he arranges to operate, but tragically she passes away. A guilt-ridden Ravi marries Shanti, much to the chagrin of his mentor, Kaka, who had hoped that his daughter Rajni Simi Garewal would marry Ravi. The newlyweds journey to Jammu and Kashmir for their honeymoon and settle into a seemingly peaceful, harmonious life together. Yet their dreams of travel are interrupted when the hospital's head doctor, David Abraham Cheulkar, pressures Ravi to concentrate on cancer research instead. They abandon their travel plans and throw themselves into research so deeply that Shanti becomes ill, and not wanting to be a burden, she leaves. A frantic Ravi searches tirelessly for her, only to discover that she has perished in a train accident. Kaka falls gravely ill, and Kaki explains to Ravi that the illness stems from Rajni's insistence that she not marry anyone except Ravi. In response, Ravi weds Rajni Simi Garewal, but the memory of Shanti haunts him, and he cannot shake it. An embittered Rajni feels neglected and confronts him, an encounter that precipitates Ravi's loss of vision, leaving him unable to continue his cancer research.
