Lucas Marsh is a talented and determined medical student, driven by a lifelong dream to become a doctor. Orphaned after his mother’s passing, he has a strained relationship with his father, whose struggle with alcoholism has left them both in difficult circumstances. With their family finances depleted, Lucas finds himself unable to pay for medical school. In a bid to secure the funds he urgently needs, he marries the older nurse, Kristina “Kris” Hedvigson, who possesses significant savings. Despite Kris’s unwavering love and support, Lucas remains indifferent, even dismissing her as “stupid,” although she excels in her nursing career. His main focus is his medical work, which leads to frequent conflicts with colleagues he considers inferior, including his best friend, Alfred Boone.
Both Kris and Alfred, alongside Lucas’s mentor, Dr. Aarons, endeavor to show Lucas the importance of compassion and the reality that mistakes are part of medicine. Holding a disdain for profit-driven doctors, Lucas completes his internship and accepts a position with Dr. Dave Runkleman in a rural practice in Greenville, targeting a community where many patients struggle to afford care. Runkleman, who battles a serious heart condition, hires Lucas with hopes that he will eventually take over the practice.
However, Lucas’s relentless workload and frustration with the local hospital’s incompetence drive him into an affair with the wealthy widow Harriet Lang. This betrayal ultimately leads Kris, who is secretly expecting their child, to leave him. When Runkleman’s heart issues intensify, Lucas is confronted with the ultimate test of his skills during surgery, but a grave mistake results in Runkleman’s death. In the aftermath of this tragedy, Lucas grapples with overwhelming guilt and reaches out to Kris, seeking her support as they strive to mend their fractured relationship.
