Read the complete plot breakdown of The Dream of the Red Chamber (1977), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened, and what it all means.

In Qing Dynasty China, the Jia family takes in the frail adolescent Lin Daiyu, Sylvia Chang, after her mother passes away. She quickly forms a bond with her cousin Baoyu, Brigitte Lin, the Jia family’s heir, who is drawn to her from the start. The two spend their childhood close to one another, sharing stories, literature, and poetry, and their connection deepens into a warm, if often intimate, companionship that defies easy social expectations.

As they grow older, Baoyu begins to flirt with Daiyu, even as Baochai, their other cousin, arrives years later to live with them. Michelle Yim brings Baochai’s calm intelligence and skill with weiqi, which captures Baoyu’s attention and stirs a pang of jealousy in Daiyu. This shift marks the beginning of a quiet spiral of melancholy for her, even as Baoyu reassures Daiyu that his feelings remain true despite Baochai’s presence.

Baoyu’s relationship with his father, Elliot Ngok Wah Jia Zheng, is strained. Jia Zheng presses him to study hard and pass exams to become a government official, a path Baoyu seems reluctant to fully embrace. When he helps the prince’s favorite actor escape, Jia Zheng comes under greater pressure to locate him, a conflict that leads to Baoyu being beaten. The family—especially the loyal servants—rally to his side: the loyal servants, Lady Wang, and Grandmother Jia step in to protect him during this vulnerable moment.

While Baoyu recovers, Baochai visits and admonishes him for befriending an actor, which adds to the friction surrounding him. In contrast, Daiyu’s visit is brief but filled with tears and affection, further underscoring the fragility of her health and the tenderness of their bond. Daiyu’s heartbreak intensifies when she sees Baochai leaving Baoyu’s residence one night, prompting her to withdraw even as Baoyu seeks her out and tries to reassure her of his enduring love.

A new, troubling plan unfolds when Baoyu attempts to visit Daiyu again and her maid Zijuan, Deborah Lee, plays a prank on him. Behind the scenes, conspirators—confiding in secrecy—decide to wed Baoyu to Baochai in an effort to “cure” his madness and to continue the Jia bloodline, given Daiyu’s frailty makes childbirth unlikely. The plan hinges on deception, with the aim of preserving the family’s future even as it wounds the heart of the two young lovers.

Despite attempts to keep the scheme hidden, a maid eventually informs Daiyu of the wedding. The revelation worsens her health, sending her into a deeper reverie as she remembers their love and mourns what might have been. In the midst of this sorrow, the wedding day arrives, and Baoyu, with a painful mixture of hope and despair, lifts the bride’s veil only to discover Baochai beneath it. He cries and pleads with his elders to allow him to be with Daiyu, but the tragic news arrives that Daiyu has died, cutting his plea short.

At Daiyu’s funeral, the only attendees are Zijuan and Baoyu, who mourn with laments filled with loss and proclaimed love. The dawn brings a royal decree: Jia Zheng is removed from his government post, and the Jia family’s assets are confiscated for losing the emperor’s trust. With the world closing in, Baoyu leaves the Jia mansion and, seeking solace beyond the constraints of court life, becomes a Buddhist monk, carrying the memory of Daiyu with him to the end.

Q1

Why does Baoyu end up marrying Baochai instead of Daiyu?

A.

Baoyu is married to Baochai because the family elders, Grandmother Jia, Lady Wang, and Xifeng, scheme to secure the Jia bloodline. They believe Daiyu is too frail to survive childbirth, while Baochai is seen as healthier and more suitable to continue the family lineage. They also hope the marriage will cure Baoyu's manic episodes, using deception to make him believe he is marrying Daiyu.

Early on, Daiyu's frailty is established when she arrives at the Jia household as a sickly adolescent, setting the justification for the family's decision.

Q2

Why does Jia Zheng beat Baoyu?

A.

Jia Zheng beats Baoyu after he helps the prince's favorite actor escape, an act that brings scrutiny and pressure onto Jia Zheng to locate the runaway actor. This defiance of his father's strict expectations, combined with Baoyu's refusal to focus on studying for government exams, triggers Jia Zheng's harsh punishment.

Baoyu's strained relationship with his father is evident from the start, as Jia Zheng constantly pushes him to pass exams and abandon his literary pursuits.

Q3

Why does Daiyu's health deteriorate throughout the story?

A.

Daiyu's health declines due to a combination of her frail constitution from childhood and the emotional turmoil caused by her relationship with Baochai. Her jealousy intensifies when she sees Baochai gaining Baoyu's attention, and learning about the secret wedding plan accelerates her decline into illness and death.

Daiyu arrives at the Jia household as a frail adolescent after her mother's death, establishing her vulnerability from the beginning.

Q4

Why does the family keep the wedding plans hidden from Baoyu and Daiyu?

A.

The family conceals the wedding plans because they need Baoyu to cooperate with the marriage to Baochai. They believe he would refuse if he knew the truth, so they trick him into thinking the bride is Daiyu. This deception is meant to protect the family's future and supposedly cure Baoyu's madness, even though it ultimately destroys both lovers.

The conspiracy begins after Zijuan's prank triggers Baoyu's breakdown, giving Grandmother Jia and Lady Wang justification to take control of his future.

Q5

What causes Baoyu's manic breakdown?

A.

Baoyu's manic breakdown is triggered when Zijuan plays a prank on him, pretending that Daiyu is moving out of the Jia mansion. The false news sends Baoyu into a frantic state, causing the household to intervene and Grandmother Jia to order that Daiyu remain in the mansion.

Earlier, Daiyu had expressed intentions to return to her own family, providing the setup for Zijuan's cruel trick.

Q6

Why does Baoyu become a Buddhist monk at the end?

A.

Baoyu becomes a Buddhist monk after two devastating losses: Daiyu dies just as he discovers Baochai is his bride, and the emperor's decree strips the Jia family of their wealth and position. With his beloved dead and his world collapsed, Baoyu rejects worldly attachments entirely and seeks spiritual refuge.

Baoyu has always shown indifference to material success and societal expectations, preferring literature and poetry over official career paths.

Q7

Why does the emperor confiscate the Jia family's assets?

A.

The emperor removes Jia Zheng from his government post and confiscates the Jia family's assets because the family has lost the emperor's trust. This likely stems from the incident where Baoyu helped the prince's favorite actor escape, bringing shame and political consequences to the family.

The earlier escape of the prince's actor creates political trouble for Jia Zheng, establishing the family's vulnerability to imperial displeasure.

Q8

Why does Daiyu withdraw from Baoyu despite loving him?

A.

Daiyu withdraws emotionally because she sees Baochai leaving Baoyu's residence at night, believing Baoyu's feelings have shifted. Her fragile emotional state and jealousy cause her to push Baoyu away, even though he tries to reassure her. This emotional distance deepens her tragedy, rejected by the one she loves while the family secretly arranges his marriage to another.

Baochai's arrival and her captivating presence over Baoyu marks the beginning of Daiyu's jealousy and withdrawal.

Q9

Why do the family elders favor Baochai over Daiyu?

A.

The family elders favor Baochai because they view her as more suitable to continue the Jia bloodline, Daiyu is seen as too frail and sickly to survive childbirth, while Baochai is healthy and intelligent. They also believe marrying Baochai to Baoyu will stabilize his mental state and secure the family's future.

From her arrival, Baochai is presented as calm, intelligent, and capable, everything the family believes Baoyu needs for a proper marriage.

Q10

Why is Daiyu's funeral so poorly attended?

A.

Daiyu's funeral is barely attended because the family keeps her death secret to avoid scandal during the wedding celebrations. Only Zijuan, her loyal maid, and Baoyu are present to mourn her. The contrast between the grand wedding and this somber funeral underscores the tragedy of Daiyu's forgotten life.

The wedding is rushed forward while Daiyu lies dying, showing the family's priority on the marriage rather than her wellbeing.
