What Happens at the End of Raayan?

How Raayan (2024) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

In the climax Raayan finally confronts the spiralling cycle of violence that has engulfed his family. After Durga’s wedding is called off, Sethu’s goons seize her and torture Raayan in a hidden clinic, but Raayan is rescued by Sekhar and the two flee back to their native village. The trauma pushes Raayan and Durga to exact brutal revenge: they capture Sethu’s second wife, force him to send his right‑hand man Guru, and Durga mercilessly slaughters him.

Just as the brothers Manickam and Muthu try to broker a truce through Sekhar, Sethu murders the man who raised Raayan, and the police commissioner R. Sargunam, who has been watching the feud, arrests Raayan and offers him a new identity and a clean start—provided he brings down Sethu once and for all. Raayan accepts, and a tentative peace is staged at the Pongal festival. The celebration is a façade; when the moment arrives, Durga plunges a dagger into Manickam’s heart while Raayan turns his gun on Sethu and Muthu, killing them both in a blood‑soaked melee.

With his brothers dead and the promise of a fresh life shattered, Raayan sees through the commissioner’s ulterior motive to eliminate any loose ends. He refuses the money and forged documents, choosing instead to abandon the city. Accompanied by Durga and the infant child of Muthu and Meghalai—who has rejected any further ties to her husband—Raayan leaves Chennai, returning to the village where his journey began. The ending leaves him poised on the threshold of a new, quieter life, but the lingering visual echoes of Ravana suggest that the same fierce protectiveness and tragic downfall that marked the mythic king now mark Raayan’s own story.

Ending questions answered

Raayan Ending: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about the ending of Raayan (2024): what the final scene means, how the twist works, what happens to each character and how to read the ending. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Raayan kill Sethu and Muthu at the Pongal festival?

Raayan kills Sethu and Muthu during the Pongal celebration because he recognizes the commissioner's peace proposal is a facade designed to lure him into a trap. When Durga plunges a dagger into Manickam's heart, the truce collapses into open violence. Raayan seizes the moment to eliminate the three men, Sethu, Muthu, and Manickam, who destroyed his family and forced him into a life of crime. The festival provided cover for the attack, allowing them to act without suspicion until it was too late.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes established that Sethu repeatedly broke truces and murdered those who trusted him, making Raayan unwilling to believe any peace offer was genuine.

  • muthu
  • pongal festival
  • killing
  • ambush
  • truce
Q2

What is Commissioner Sargunam's real plan?

Commissioner R. Sargunam offers Raayan a clean start with a new identity and forged documents, but his true intention is to use Raayan as a weapon to eliminate Sethu's entire gang. Once Sethu and his allies are dead, Sargunam plans to silence Raayan as well, he is simply another loose end in a criminal underworld he has been manipulating from behind the scenes. The commissioner has been watching the feud unfold, waiting for the right moment to deploy Raayan before disposing of him.

Foreshadowing: The commissioner is shown observing the conflict throughout the film without intervening, suggesting he has a strategic interest in its outcome.

  • new identity
  • forged documents

Q3

Why does Raayan refuse the commissioner's offer?

Raayan refuses the commissioner's offer because he recognizes Sargunam's ulterior motive, he understands that once the job is done, he will be eliminated just like Sethu was. After watching his brothers die and seeing through the commissioner's manipulation, Raayan chooses to reject the corrupt system entirely. He refuses the blood money and forged documents, deciding instead to walk away from the violent world that has cost him everything.

Foreshadowing: The commissioner's earlier silence while the feud escalated foreshadows his willingness to let criminals destroy each other rather than uphold true justice.

  • money

Q4

Why does Durga kill Manickam at the festival?

Durga kills Manickam because he was directly involved in the violence against her family, his role in the feud made him complicit in the torture, abductions, and murders that shattered her life. The wedding cancellation after Sethu's goons abducted her already drove Durga toward brutal revenge. When the opportunity arises during the truce, she acts on her thirst for vengeance, stabbing Manickam in the heart alongside Raayan's attack on Sethu and Muthu.

Foreshadowing: Durga's capture and torture by Sethu's goons fundamentally changes her character, shifting her from an innocent bride-to-be into someone capable of cold-blooded murder.

Q5

What happens to Muthu's baby at the end?

Muthu's infant child is taken by Raayan and Durga when they leave Chennai. The baby's mother, Meghalai, has rejected any further ties to her husband Muthu, so she allows Raayan to bring the child with them to the village. This represents a small glimmer of hope amid the tragedy, a new life that Raayan vows to protect, contrasting with the cycle of violence that claimed Muthu's life.

Foreshadowing: Meghalai's rejection of Muthu earlier in the film foreshadows her willingness to let the child go with Raayan rather than remain connected to his criminal world.

Q6

What does the ending's Ravana visual reference mean?

The ending visually echoes Ravana, the mythical king from the Ramayana, to suggest Raayan shares the same tragic destiny. Just as Ravana was a powerful figure destroyed by his own violent protectiveness and downfall, Raayan's story follows the same pattern, he destroyed enemies to protect his family but lost everything in the process. The visual imagery implies the cycle of violence and sacrifice will continue to define Raayan's legacy, even as he attempts to start anew in his village.

Foreshadowing: The film's title and themes of familial loyalty taken to extreme violence set up this mythic parallel throughout the narrative.

Q7

Why does Raayan leave Chennai at the end?

Raayan leaves Chennai because the city represents everything that destroyed his family, corruption, gang violence, and political manipulation. After losing his brothers and seeing through the commissioner's scheme, he chooses to return to his roots in his native village. He wants to escape the violent world that claimed his brothers' lives and give Durga and Muthu's child a chance at a peaceful life away from the crime and betrayal that defined their time in the city.

Durga kills Manickam with a dagger during the festival, while Raayan shoots and kills both Sethu and Muthu in the blood-soaked melee that follows. Q9

Why does Sethu murder the man who raised Raayan?

Sethu murders the man who raised Raayan as a final act of spite and intimidation, knowing this figure represents Raayan's only remaining moral anchor. By killing Raayan's adoptive father, Sethu ensures there is no possibility of reconciliation and pushes Raayan toward uncontrollable rage, effectively eliminating any chance of a peaceful resolution and guaranteeing brutal revenge.

Foreshadowing: Sethu's pattern of eliminating anyone close to Raayan throughout the film establishes his willingness to use personal connections as weapons.

Q10

Why is the ending considered bittersweet?

The ending is bittersweet because Raayan achieves his goal of destroying Sethu's gang and securing freedom from the corrupt system, but at tremendous personal cost. He loses both of his brothers, Manickam and Muthu, who were manipulated into the conflict. He must raise his sister's trauma and Muthu's orphaned child while carrying the weight of everyone he killed.
