Four Brothers

On a frigid, snowy night in Detroit, the story unfolds with an El Camino shadowing another vehicle around town. The driver of the pursued car, Evelyn Mercer (Fionnula Flanagan](/actor/fionnula-flanagan)), an elderly woman with a kind heart, unexpectedly intervenes when she catches a young boy named Darnell (Tahliel Hawthorne) in the act of stealing a candy bar. Though she threatens to call the police, her intimidation serves as a wake-up call for Darnell, who promises never to steal again. As Evelyn selects a Thanksgiving turkey from the back of the store, two masked robbers burst in, brandishing shotguns and demanding money from the cashier, Samir (Pablo Silveira). Evelyn witnesses the confrontation from her hiding spot but cannot prevent the chaos that ensues, ultimately leading to Samir’s tragic death and the robbers fleeing the scene.

Bobby Mercer (Mark Wahlberg](/actor/mark-wahlberg)) returns to Detroit for Evelyn’s funeral, grappling with the loss of the woman who adopted him and his three brothers—Jeremiah (André 3000), Jack (Garrett Hedlund), and Angel ([inknm0879085). During an emotional reception at Jeremiah’s home, the brothers reminisce about their upbringing in the foster care system, with Jeremiah delivering a heartfelt eulogy that encapsulates Evelyn’s loving influence. While Lieutenant Green (Terrence Howard) shares details of Evelyn’s murder investigation, the brothers express skepticism about the police’s ability to find her killers, particularly after Green hints at the connection to a local basketball player who witnessed the events.

The brothers return to the Mercer home, weighed down by their grief. Bobby sets up in Evelyn’s room and finds himself overwhelmed by the memories. As Thanksgiving approaches, they attempt to celebrate despite their heavy hearts. Before long, the brothers resolve to investigate Evelyn’s murder themselves. After gathering intel from a bartender regarding gang activity, they crash a party to confront the gang leader, only to find themselves enmeshed in a perilous game of cat-and-mouse as they seek vengeance. Their quest leads them to uncover that Damian (Lyriq Bent), a crucial witness, had been paid to lie to the police about the shooting.

Following a trail of clues, they encounter various characters, including Damian and the shady Fowler (Josh Charles), whose connection to Evelyn’s murder becomes increasingly apparent as they dig deeper. Meanwhile, the police investigation becomes complicated as Green discovers evidence that suggests foul play among the department, particularly relating to Fowler’s shady dealings.

As tensions mount, the brothers navigate deep emotional scars and family loyalties, leading to devastating encounters resulting in betrayal, violence, and heartbreak. Jack’s tragic death at the hands of their adversaries forces the brothers to reevaluate their risky decisions. Desperate for resolution, they hatch a plan involving a confrontation with Victor Sweet (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a gangster who holds the keys to their mother’s murder.

In a climactic scene on a frozen lake, the brothers confront Sweet and deliver a brutal blow that ultimately leads to Sweet’s demise. As the police close in, the Mercer brothers stand strong, refusing to betray each other. They withstand interrogations and emerge battered but resilient.

By Christmas, the brothers channel their grief into rebuilding their lives and home, making peace with their past. As they find solace in family, Bobby shares a final, heartfelt moment with the memory of Evelyn, symbolizing their enduring bond even in loss.
