Sarkar (2005) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Sarkar (2005), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Business magnate Deven Gandhi approaches Subhash Nagre ‘Sarkar’ [Amitabh Bachchan] for a real estate deal over a sprawling Dharavi slum in Mumbai. Sarkar counsels a fair approach: offer proper compensation and relocate the slum dwellers. Gandhi finds that option too costly and tries to twist the deal by offering a smaller commission, hoping Sarkar will back the relocation anyway. Sarkar refuses to be bought, and when Gandhi insists he’ll push ahead through other power centers, Sarkar makes it clear he will not let him proceed. Gandhi then reports back to his Dubai‑based boss, Vallya, and the two join forces with a rival opposition leader, Govind Deshpande, to topple Sarkar.

Sarkar’s wife Pushpa Subhash Nagre, [Supriya Pathak], pleads with him to let their grandson Shivaji Nagre “Chiku” [Chintan Atul Shah] come into the fold and learn the ropes. Chiku, hot‑headed and quick to act, immediately clashes with Gokul, Sarkar’s longtime loyal right hand, and Raman Guru over how to handle Deshpande. It’s hinted that Chiku’s girlfriend Annu is using him to reach Sarkar, since Sarkar had allegedly eliminated her father. In the background, Gandhi scheme continues and Gandhi’s ally Vallya pressures Gokul to cooperate; the threat is clear—if Chiku is kept out, he could become Sarkar’s replacement and Gokul would simply be left as a servant.

Deshpande collaborates with Gandhi and Vallya to ignite mill workers against Sarkar. Chiku roars into the fray, intent on destroying Deshpande and striking at the heart of Sarkar’s empire. Sarkar, ever calculating, probes for the mastermind behind the growing danger. Deshpande is hotly pursued and killed, and Sarkar is blamed for the crime, a result of the villain’s sly, patient planning. The festival Ganpati Visarjan becomes a flashpoint when assassins open fire on Sarkar, revealing a breach inside his trusted circle. Chiku presents Sarkar with a video showing Gandhi’s meeting with Gokul, and Gokul himself later concedes that Chiku—used by Annu for revenge and driven by his own hunger—may be the brains behind the moves.

Sarkar expels Chiku, who then joins Gandhi. Vallya lands in India and tries to sway Sarkar, arguing that Chiku is too inexperienced to carry the burden of Sarkar’s legacy. Sarkar answers by revealing a twisting truth: Chiku had been sent by Sarkar himself to infiltrate Gandhi, and it was Sarkar who ordered Gokul’s killing. Annu discovers the truth that Gandhi was the one who killed her father and she shoots Gandhi.

In hindsight, tensions with Annu soften, and she is brought into confidence, while Gokul’s defection to Gandhi’s camp helps lay the groundwork for the mill agitation and the slum development aimed at sidelining Chiku—ultimately hoping to become Sarkar. Chiku then walks in, kills Raman Guru, another gunshot follows, and Vallya is shown dead. With their adversaries removed, Sarkar and Chiku share a quiet moment over tea as Sarkar begins to school the younger man in the art of palace politics, preparing him for the complex world they inhabit.
