Alice Bowman moves to the fictional South American country of Tecala with her husband Peter, who has been assigned to assist in constructing a dam. Despite her unease about yet another relocation, she supports Peter in his professional endeavor.

Tragedy strikes when Peter is ambushed during a convoy while traveling in Tecala and is taken hostage by guerrilla rebels from the Liberation Army of Tecala (ELT). This shocking event sends Alice into a state of desperation as she grapples with the reality of her husband’s captivity.

Terry Thorne, an experienced ex-Australian soldier, is called in to help secure Peter's release after successfully completing a hostage rescue mission in Chechnya. His reputation for handling complex ransom situations precedes him, and Alice hopes he can save Peter.

Terry discovers that Peter's employer does not have adequate insurance to cover the ransom amount, which results in his temporary dismissal from the mission. Alice pleads with him not to leave, feeling hopeless without his expertise in the negotiation process.

With no other options, Alice teams up with a local hostage negotiator to meet the initial ransom demand of $50,000 set by the ELT. This partnership marks the beginning of a tense negotiation process, as Alice is determined to secure Peter's freedom.

Moved by Alice's determination and her heartfelt pleas, Thorne returns to Tecala just as negotiations are about to finalize. Together with an ex-Green Beret named Dino, he aims to rescue Peter and stabilize the situation with the ELT.

Tensions rise as the ELT escalates their ransom demand to an astonishing $650,000. Over the course of several weeks, discussions and negotiations take a psychological toll on Alice and Thorne, who are both deeply invested in Peter's safe return.

While held captive in a jungle camp, Peter meets Kessler, a long-term hostage who has his own traumatic history. Together, they devise an escape plan, but their hopes are dashed when Peter is captured again just before they can execute it.

Kessler, after recovering in the hospital, shares grim news with Alice, expressing his belief that Peter may be dead after hearing gunfire during Peter's recapture. Hope wanes as the threat becomes more tangible, but Thorne remains determined to uncover the truth.

A pivotal moment occurs when Alice's housekeeper’s daughter recognizes the ELT’s radio contact through her previous work. This revelation aids Thorne in uncovering more about the ELT's intentions and leads to crucial intelligence during the Tecala Armed Forces Demonstration Parade.

Thorne's investigation during the parade leads to identifying the legitimate ELT negotiator. Confirming that Peter is alive raises hopes, but it complicates negotiations as the ELT realizes Peter has gained sensitive information, threatening their operations.

Thorne devises a clever strategy to persuade Alice to convince the Tecala government that the ELT intends to attack a newly constructed oil pipeline. This tactic successfully mobilizes the army, prompting a diversion of ELT forces away from Peter’s camp.
