The film opens with a heart-wrenching moment as Louis finds himself at the mercy of a ruthless bully who relieves him of $27. Just when things seem bleak, his loyal friend Ordell, played by Tim Robbins, comes to the rescue by running down the assailant with his vehicle. This initial act of retaliation ignites a spark of mischief as the pair hatches an intricate plot to generate wealth through extortion. Their target is none other than Frank Dawson, a powerful real estate magnate, whom they plot to blackmail by abducting his wife, Mickey, and demanding a staggering $1 million in ransom. The seeds of their scheme are sown in the knowledge of Frank’s secretive bank activities in the Bahamas and his dubious business practices.

As fate would have it, Mickey, portrayed by Isla Fisher, takes her young son Bo for a tennis match at the country club, where she serendipitously encounters Louis in a corridor, leading to a fleeting yet significant interaction. Meanwhile, Marshall Taylor, a married man with a penchant for affairs, becomes infatuated with Mickey, though his advances are met with indifference.

With both Frank and Bo scheduled to be away for an entire week, Ordell and Louis seize the opportunity to set their plan in motion. They don masks and storm into Mickey’s kitchen, catching her by surprise. In the chaos, a glass falls and injures her slightly, but the kidnapping proceeds smoothly until Marshall unexpectedly arrives, throwing their plot into disarray. The two extend their violence, striking him and locking him in a closet before fleeing with a bewildered Mickey.

Once they have secured their captive at Richard’s house – a self-proclaimed admirer of unsavory ideologies – Mickey is confined to a bedroom, blindfolded to obscure the faces of her captors tending to her needs. Louis shows a surprising side of humanity as he painstakingly bandages Mickey’s injured foot, revealing a sense of concern that contrasts with their scheme.

Meanwhile, Frank, luxuriating with his mistress Melanie, receives a chilling call from Ordell. The tranquil scenery of the Bahamas morphs into tension as Mickey’s taunting voice outlines the kidnapping and ransom demand, revealing Frank’s calculative nature that is focused on ditching Mickey for Melanie. Frank’s lackluster demeanor as he contemplates leaving his wife combined with the divorce papers sent to an empty home highlights his cold detachment.

Back at Richard’s, tension mounts as the search for Marshall intensifies, who has gone missing from the closet. Louis and Mickey engage in a conversation about the ransom and Frank’s hidden wealth, wherein she unexpectedly recognizes him from their time at the country club.

As the incident continues to spiral out of control, Mickey covertly overhears Louis and Ordell as they discuss their next steps, positioning herself to gather intelligence. In a separate unfolding drama, Marshall mistakenly confronts Richard, who misinterprets him for a cop, leading to a confrontation that escalates dangerously.

The plot thickens further when Ordell and Cedric pay a visit to Melanie at the pool, now aware of Frank’s impending divorce. She proposes a lower ransom of $100,000, which could increase if Mickey’s fate takes a turn for the worse, thus forming a treacherous partnership with Ordell, who then informs Richard of a new approach.

As the scheme progresses, Louis makes a daring move to “retrieve” a sleek getaway car while Richard attempts to assault Mickey. Fortunately, Louis intervenes just in time, whisking her away to safety. They plan to head to Mickey’s home, but she opts to accompany Louis to his instead. The following morning reveals the harsh reality of divorce papers stacked at her door, catalyzing a visit to former colleagues in search of comfort.

However, the calm is shattered with Frank’s surprise arrival, leading to a confrontational exchange about the ransom, the forthcoming divorce, and the mysterious $1 million in question. Frank’s denials clash with Mickey’s mounting frustration, driving her back into Louis’s arms. A subsequent meeting with Ordell unveils a shocking twist: Melanie is under their control. As Melanie steps outside for a breath of fresh air, the trio devises a daring plan, donning masks for a fresh kidnapping attempt, this time targeting Melanie, demonstrating how their labyrinthine scheme continues to evolve unpredictably.
