The film intricately weaves together two narratives that span across three decades, revealing the complexities of the post-Stalinist Soviet Union and the early 1990s Russia. Set against the backdrop of this tumultuous period, we are introduced to Katya, a young woman whose life was irrevocably changed by the Great Purge. Although she outwardly adheres to communist principles, she secretly resents the regime and works in collaboration with American intelligence.

Her confidant, Misha, is essential in supporting her secretive endeavors by providing crucial intelligence for the Americans. In the course of their operations, Katya encounters Sasha, a charismatic and influential figure within the Kremlin. Misha persuades Katya to marry Sasha, thereby giving her access to vital information from the core of his circle.

Initially, Katya feels conflicted about deceiving her new spouse, but eventually, she embraces the deceitful scheme. Unbeknownst to her, Sasha is also struggling with his own ideals, and his growing disillusionment with his Kremlin duties leads him to contemplate defection during an official trip to the United States.

Sasha’s adaptation to life as a businessman in America is punctuated by a persistent feeling of disconnection from his Russian past, especially concerning Katya’s destiny. Jumping forward to the early 1990s, we meet Lauren, Sasha’s niece and an artist whose opportunity to exhibit in Moscow triggers a revelatory journey. In Moscow, she crosses paths with Marina, a journalist equally dedicated to unearthing concealed truths.

Together, Lauren and Marina set out to piece together Katya’s mysterious past, leading them to find Misha, who is now battling his own demons of addiction. In a poignant turn of events, Sasha decides to return to Moscow, where he reconnects with Misha at Lauren’s gallery. As the former spy begins to disclose the secrets surrounding Katya’s past, the narrative gracefully transports the audience back in time, illuminating the significant events that unfolded over the last thirty years.
