Outlaw Johnny Black [Michael Jai White] arrives in the rough town of Cheyanne just as trouble erupts: he witnesses an Indian kid being beaten by white men, steps in to intervene, and is quickly overpowered and jailed. In a moment of daring quick thinking, he tries to warn the town that Brett Clayton [Chris Browning] is planning a bank job, and his warning comes true as the bank is robbed and several innocent lives are lost.
A long memory drives the story backward to a night years earlier when Johnny’s parents were celebrated exhibition shooters. Brett Clayton challenged Johnny’s father to a Quick Draw Duel and killed him while he was unarmed, planting a seed of vengeance that threads through Johnny’s every move.
On the eve of his execution, Johnny is saved by a band of Indians and escapes on a horse, only to see the animal perish from thirst. He is rescued again, this time by a preacher named Percy [Byron Minns], but tragedy strikes when Indian forces mortally wound Percy, who is left unconscious as Johnny flees in a horse carriage. Percy’s fate eventually leads to a forced marriage with the Indian Chief’s daughter, a twist that tightens the town’s uneasy alliances.
Johnny travels to a neighboring town, assuming Percy’s persona, and his arrival is met with confusion and sympathy. Bessie Lee [Erica Ash] embraces the new “Percy” without realizing the switch, having only shared letters with Percy in the past. Johnny soon learns that Tom Sheally [Barry Bostwick] is not helping the town but trying to seize its land and wealth by any means.
The following day, the real Percy shows up, having escaped the Indians, and Johnny works to keep the deception from unraveling. He convinces the townsfolk that Percy is actually Deacon, a ruse that buys him time while he continues to search for a hidden treasure map he has uncovered.
That night, Bessie sleeps with Percy, mistaking him for Johnny, while Bessie’s sister Jessie Lee [Anika Noni Rose] strikes up a friendship with the enigmatic newcomer. The next morning, Johnny is pressed to deliver a sermon at church, and he channels his father’s most memorable message about forgiveness, a moment that moves the congregation and deepens the town’s sense of shared fate.
Meanwhile, the two sisters confront Johnny about the prior night’s confusion, and the relationship sours as they part ways. A barroom brawl erupts, and Marshal Cove [Kevin Chapman] begins to suspect Johnny’s true identity. To prove his point, Johnny reveals the treasure map to Cove, but Tom’s henchman Eddie overhears and shoots Cove, escalating the danger.
With Jessie by his side, Johnny shows her the map again, and the pair realize that Tom’s plan rests on gaining control of the land for its oil—at any cost. Tom abducts Jessie and imposes a ruthless deadline to secure the land deed. Percy and Bessie find reconciliation in the midst of chaos, while Johnny is tossed in jail for the shooting of Cove.
Percy visits Johnny in prison and leaves him a Bible containing a key to the cell. Using the clue, Johnny frees himself and Jessie and then goes on the offensive, fending off Tom’s men. Brett [Chris Browning] returns with a vengeful force, but Percy appears with the Indians as well as Marshal Cove and Johnny, turning the tide of the confrontation into a full-blown showdown.
A climactic battle ensues, Johnny delivering the final blow to Brett and finally avenging his father’s death. With the town’s future secured and the threat removed, money begins to flow back in, Johnny is elected the new sheriff, and the residents celebrate with a hopeful, dance-filled toast to a more prosperous tomorrow.
