Confederate guerrillas launch a late-war raid on a Union Army camp, but the ambush is turned on its head by the sharp-shooting of Frank James and the distractions engineered by his brother Jesse James. Joined by their cousins, the Younger brothers, they ride away with a hard-won sense of luck, only to face the sobering truth: the Confederacy has surrendered and the fighting has effectively ended. With that news, the group resolves to return to Missouri, reuniting with their families and the farms they left behind.

When they reach Missouri, they find a town under Union occupation. Zee, Jesse’s childhood friend and cousin, has grown into an attractive young woman, and the town square bears the visible mark of its hardships, with a man hanging as a grim warning. Farmers face intense pressure to sell their lands to a railroad company, threatening to burn homes or take lives if they refuse. Thaddeus Rains and his secret-service organizer Allan Pinkerton push hard on the land deals, revealing a relentless drive to redraw the map of the region. Frank soon learns that the railroad doesn’t truly need the land at all, and the James and Younger brothers push back. Cole Younger’s temper flares when several railroad men approach him about selling, culminating in killings that spark a desperate response from the authorities who plan to hang him. His brothers Bob and Jim, along with Jesse, Frank, and Zee, mount a daring rescue. During the escape, Jesse is wounded in the shoulder and hides out at Zee’s.

A few weeks later, the railroad retaliates by setting fire to the James home, killing Jesse’s mother and cementing a thirst for revenge. Yet the group’s path shifts from personal vendetta to a broader windfall: the payrolls stored in banks and the trains carrying supplies become their new targets. They rebrand themselves as the James–Younger Gang and begin a series of bank robberies and audacious raids, drawing the relentless pursuit of Pinkerton and Rains while simultaneously turning into folk legends of the era. The internal dynamic of leadership tightens and frays as Cole suspects Jesse’s rising fame is inflating ego and ambition. After a heated exchange, Jesse steps back to let Cole design and execute the next robbery, but the plan backfires as Pinkerton and Rains set a trap. Jim is killed, and the brothers depart from the gang, with Jesse eventually marrying Zee and seeking a quieter life.

The gang’s strength wanes without the James brothers, and the Younger siblings never command the same respect. When Jesse and Zee attempt to start anew, Pinkerton closes in and arrests Jesse. On the train ride to the jail, Jesse is chained in a rear car, yet he cunningly disarms a deputy, climbs to the top of the car, and regains control of the situation. Zee and the remainder of the gang fire a cannon to halt the train and mount a daring rescue. Confronted with Rains and Pinkerton, Jesse refuses to shoot them, instead targeting Rains’ prized watch. Pinkerton then tells Jesse that Tennessee may offer a better horizon, remarking that the railroad has little interest there, and the legend of the James–Younger Gang continues to echo through the era.
