Paul Chan [Andy Lau] is a well-mannered 17-year-old secondary school student whose outward polish hides a willingness to bend the rules when his hot-headed younger brother, Dee Yim Chau-Wa and a circle of friends push the line, even taking part in damaging actions like blowing up a rich man’s car after an insult. Their father, Larry Elliot Ngok Wah, is a prison officer who enforces discipline with a firm hand, and his stern, protective approach forms the backbone of their tense home life.

The story threads through a day-to-day collision between Paul’s public politeness and the rough edges of his brother’s world. After an incident where a fight erupts and trouble bursts into the family’s orbit, the police step in, led by King Kong Lau Kwok-Shing, a vigilant officer who makes it clear that Paul’s path is under scrutiny. A night of reckless bravado with Dee and their friends ends with Dee injured and briefly mixing with a seedy crowd, while Paul quietly bears the consequences at home as his father reallocates attention and dinner away from him.

At school, Paul endures punishment for behaviors fueled by his environment, while Dee and their classmates push further, even preparing for a confrontation with a rival group. A turn in the family dynamics comes when Paul learns of his own exam disappointment and encounters Sze, a Vietnamese refugee, which stirs a new, more personal set of ambitions and anxieties for his future. As the brothers drift between school, street circles, and a refugee camp, a cascading set of choices pulls Paul and Dee into increasingly dangerous schemes. One act leads to another: a plan to sabotage Winnie’s mother’s supermarket as a way to strike at the girlfriend’s influence, a confrontation with King Kong and his squad, and a brutal chain of events that ends with Dee being fatally shot by the police officer during a clash, and Paul being arrested and imprisoned. A high-stakes auto race arranged by the gang’s boss becomes a proving ground, and Paul wins, something that steels his resolve even as it pushes him further from the life he once knew. Meanwhile, the refugee camp becomes a focal point for Paul’s longing to marry Sze, a dream that is dashed when Sze faces the reality of being sent away to New Guinea, and his father remains firm in his refusal to permit the match.

When Paul learns of Sze’s impending departure, he returns to the refugee camp to press his case, only to be pulled into a brutal standoff where King Kong again looms large. The dispute escalates into a final, high-stakes confrontation in a closed shopping mall. Paul lures King Kong into the deserted space, a tense pursuit unfolds with cars weaving through the twists of the mall’s layout, and the pair exchange determined blows and near misses. Paul tries to outmaneuver the officer with a combination of speed and grit, grabbing King Kong’s revolver, and in a shocking turn, the two exchange shots that end with Paul managing to strike back and a final act of calculated aggression. In the end, despite a surge of resolve and a raw desire to protect what he loves, Paul is gravely wounded in the confrontation, a stark culmination of a life shaped by conflict, loyalty, and a search for belonging.

The film paints a vivid, unflinching portrait of a family under pressure, where loyalty complicates love, and where the boundaries between right and wrong blur in the face of fear and need. It is a story about growing up too fast in a world that offers little safety nets, where the line between protector and oppressor is thin, and where the cost of rebellion can be paid in blood.
