Berlin-Gropiusstadt, in the hot summer of 2003 and amid a wave of social reforms, becomes the backdrop for a tightly knit group of teens navigating a rough orbit in Neukölln. Lukas, Julius and Gino spit out their days chasing small thrills: smoking a lot of pot, trying (often failing) to charm girls, and making plans that drift between naïve bravado and the harsher pull of their surroundings. Into this mix steps Sanchez, a new classmate with a half-Cuban background, who quickly befriends the trio and brings a different energy into their already volatile dynamic.

Home life for each of them is a bundle of troubles. Lukas shows flickers of real potential, earning praise from a teacher for his well-crafted essays, while his older brother Marco is a living street legend whose own debts tie him to the underworld in a way that looms over Lukas’s future. Lukas’s father, Matthias, is unemployed and struggling to manage the household after the death of Lukas’s mother. Gino bears the brunt of his father’s violence, a loud, volatile alcoholic who terrorizes both his wife and son. Julius, meanwhile, lives in a rundown apartment with his older brother, who is perpetually drunk or high and drags him into late-night escapades. Sanchez’s home situation is no easier: a single mother who works hard yet struggles to keep the family afloat. In such a milieu, friendship feels like a lifeline and risk feels almost inevitable.

One morning, a problem at school becomes a flashpoint. Lukas cannot enter the building because his student ID is missing, forcing him to meet up with his already restless friends. When the group tries to buy a small amount of weed in a nearby park, they stumble into a violent clash between rival dealer factions. A mass brawl erupts, the police intervene, and Lukas is beaten. The trouble compounds when one drug-dealer gang demands 500 euros as compensation for the police disturbance on their turf. The trio, already short on cash for everyday teenage pleasures—swimming pool visits, parties, and hanging out with girls—find themselves deeper in debt and danger.

To fix their money woes, Sanchez suggests a daring plan: break into their own school at night and steal the brand-new state-funded student computers. The plan unfolds with a rough edge; the break-in succeeds, but the next day the school is swarming with police and journalists, and the heist becomes a symbol of the media-fueled drama surrounding the “troubled school.” The three manage to sell three of the computers for a modest sum, enough to upgrade their outfits and feel momentarily powerful, even as the money does little to ease the weight of their troubles. Lukas faces a telling moment when his teacher, Mr. Sonnabend, asks for a private interview: the veteran teacher suspects that the problem lies with students of immigrant background, and Lukas must navigate the tension between seeking help and the suspicion cast upon him.

The boys’ mischief continues to unravel their family life as the debt to the drug dealers grows heavier. The gang responsible for the 500 euros complains, and they destroy Lukas’s father’s car as punishment, a brutal reminder of the consequences that ripple through the lives of everyone involved. In a tense exchange with the dealer’s leader, Lukas tries to de-escalate the situation; the dealer’s family—especially his Muslim mothers and aunts—mediate, insisting on a peaceful resolution. In a fragile truce, Lukas is asked to surrender his newly bought sneakers to seal the deal, a small but painful concession that underscores how quickly pride can give way to survival.

Back at home, Lukas’s older brother Marco re-enters the frame in a dangerous way. He arranges a meeting with a buyer for the remaining computers, hoping to cash in and ease his own debts. The plan backfires when the buyer turns out to be an accomplice of Marco, someone who doesn’t intend to pay and instead uses the money to fund his criminal enterprises. Marco’s duplicity reveals a chilling layer of entanglement: he uses Lukas’s stolen ID—already exposed in the earlier scene—to roll cigarettes and keep money moving through the underworld, a detail that tightens the noose around Lukas and his friends.

Meanwhile, the tension in Gino’s home spirals. Gino, increasingly desperate about his brutal father, ends up taking a drug given by Julius and gains the courage to confront his abuser. He attacks his father with a bottle and injures him badly, before leaping out of a window to escape. The trio’s world grows heavier still when Julius discovers his girlfriend Denise making out with a drug dealer, Cem. A brief scuffle ensues, but the group quickly recognizes that getting to the hospital for Gino’s sake is the priority. The film closes with the friends visiting the badly injured but responsive Gino, a quiet moment of solidarity that seals their enduring bond.

In the end, what begins as reckless experimentation and street-level schemes becomes a meditation on loyalty, the pull of family—both blood and chosen—and the fragile line between friendship and crime. The film refuses to offer easy conclusions, instead lingering on the sense that, for these young people, the next choice feels like the one that could reshape everything they know about themselves and the world around them.
