Lee Ka-yin (Danny Lee), nicknamed Bee, a diamond smuggler and former triad member and ex-con who has spent time behind bars, arrives in Taiwan for a high-stakes deal with the Taiwanese triad leader, Hark (Blackie Ko Shou-Liang). During the trade, Hark presses Bee to smuggle cocaine, a proposition Bee rejects. When Hark treats the suggestion as a joke, Bee pulls a gun on him, and a clash erupts with one of Hark’s henchmen. Bee proves swift and lethal, slicing through the threat with a sword. After the exchange, Bee tells Kwan (Felix Lok Ying-Kwan) that he intends to go straight, while Kwan hides in Taiwan for three years to dodge an assault charge and longingly plans to return to Hong Kong. Bee then heads back home and provides Kwan with cash to slip into Hong Kong by boat.

Bee’s younger brother Kevin (Aaron Kwok) is a college student studying music and dance, dreaming of becoming a singer. Upon Bee’s return, their mother (Lisa Chiao-Chiao) struggles with his criminal past, and the family moves into a 1,400-square-foot condo Bee buys to settle the tensions. Bee rekindles a relationship with Hung (Sharla Cheung Man), a pub hostess, and reconnects with Kwan and Superman (Shing Fui-On). Hung suggests Bee take control of a nightclub, and Superman lines himself up as manager. Kevin starts performing at the pub, and Bee’s temper clashes with crowded patrons, leading to a scuffle that Kevin tries to interrupt but is knocked down; Bee defends him with help from Kwan and Superman.

At school, Kevin enters a singing contest after classmates encourage him, and he spots Donna (Lucy Liu) during a dance rehearsal, later asking her out. Bee seeks additional funds from Uncle Kau (Wu Ma) to acquire the nightclub, mortgaging his condo to raise extra cash. Kevin advances in the singing contest, and Bee, Hung, Superman, and Kwan attempt to bribe judge Yip Hon-leung to secure Kevin’s victory. The group attends the finale to cheer Kevin, who ends up losing. The attempt to influence the outcome triggers trouble: Yip is assaulted, Kevin is arrested for assault and bribery, and Bee ends up taking the fall as a guilty party, while his mother collapses in court and dies shortly after in the hospital. Bee pleads with Officer Wong (Parkman Wong Pak-Man) to attend his mother’s funeral, and Kevin blames Bee for their mother’s death. Bee then accepts responsibility, receives a prison sentence of 2 years and 9 months, and his condo is seized by the court.

During Bee’s incarceration, a record producer and former contest judge, Peter Lai (Peter Lai Bei-Dak), approaches Kevin with a professional path, and Kevin’s singing career begins to rise while Bee is away. Upon his release, Bee reconnects with Hung and Superman, who has fallen on hard times as a cleaner due to debt. They attend Kevin’s birthday party with fans, but Lai tries to keep them from impacting Kevin’s career. Bee leaves a Christian cross necklace as a gift, which Lai eventually returns to Kevin, who rushes to reunite with his brother. Hung later hands Bee a ticket to Kevin’s upcoming Taiwan concert.

Meanwhile, Kwan remains in Taiwan, owing a large debt to Hark. When Hark threatens to chop off his fingers, Kwan suggests kidnapping Kevin to clear the debt. Bee attends Kevin’s Taiwan concert, where Kevin’s final song is dedicated to his brother. Kevin recognises Bee in the crowd and Bee goes backstage to intervene as Kwan attempts the kidnapping. Bee saves Kevin and kills Kwan with a samurai sword, just as Hark arrives and stabs Bee. Kevin then retaliates by killing Hark and his henchmen, and Bee dies in Kevin’s arms.
