What Happens in Mirage: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Mirage (2018) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In 1989, amid the opening of the Berlin Wall and a ferocious 72-hour electrical storm, a boy named Nico Lasarte [Julio Bohigas-Couto] records a video from his home and glimpses a confrontation inside his neighbor’s house. He stumbles upon the body of Hilda Weiss [Clara Segura], the wife of neighbor Ángel Prieto [Javier Gutiérrez], and when he tries to flee, a car strike traps him on the road. Prieto is arrested, the murder weapon in hand, as Nico dies in the accident.

In 2014, Vera Roy [Adriana Ugarte] and David Ortiz [Álvaro Morte] move into Nico’s old house with their daughter Gloria [Luna Fulgencio], discovering an old TV, a video recorder, and a cache of cassettes in a storage area. A storm rekindles memories from the past, and after the family watches Nico’s tape, the TV inexplicably begins broadcasting live news from the moment Nico was filming. Over dinner, they recount the event to their friend and neighbor Aitor [Miquel Fernández] and his mother Clara Medina [Nora Navas], who fill in more details about the troubled history of the house. Vera soon finds she can interact with the boy on the screen; at first terrified, she gradually tries to warn Nico to stay off the road.

The next morning, Vera awakens in a startlingly different reality: no one else remembers the previous night’s events, David is not her husband, and Gloria never existed. Desperate to set things right, Vera seeks help from Inspector Leira [Chino Darín], and together they explore the possibility that the storm allows communication with Nico through the television. Vera pushes for proof and directs the authorities to uncover a body beneath Prieto’s slaughterhouse. A skeleton found in a suitcase confirms a long-buried truth, and Prieto—now living with Aitor and Clara—is arrested. It is revealed that Prieto and Clara were having an affair and were caught by Weiss, leading to a fight in which Clara accidentally stabbed Weiss.

Inspector Leira aids Vera by sharing information about Nico and guiding her to an address. When Vera visits the address, she discovers David cheating on her with a nurse he met during surgery. Vera leverages this knowledge to pressure David for answers about Nico. It’s then revealed that Inspector Leira is Nico Lasarte, and the two have a complicated relationship in this reality.

Leira explains how waiting for Vera for years unintentionally kept her from meeting Aitor and, therefore, from forming a life with David. Desperate to correct what happened, Vera asks Leira to reset events using the TV and recorder. She sacrifices herself, hoping Leira will intervene, and he uses the devices to reach his younger self.

Vera then wakes in a new version of reality that resembles an earlier timeline—David is again her husband and Gloria her daughter, but Nico remains alive. She discovers that David’s infidelity persists and, armed with new resolve, contacts the police to uncover a body beneath the slaughterhouse. There she again encounters Inspector Leira, and this time she longs to forge a fresh future for herself and her daughter.

Mirage Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Mirage (2018): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

How does the TV allow communication between timelines in Mirage?

The TV works as a portal during the electrical storms that occur every 25 years. When Vera watches Nico's video cassette during the 2014 storm, the television begins broadcasting live footage from 1989 at the exact moment Nico was filming. This creates a bridge between the two time periods, allowing Vera to see and interact with Nico in real-time through the screen. The phenomenon is tied to the 72-hour electrical storm that blankets the city, similar to the one that occurred during the Berlin Wall's fall in 1989.

Foreshadowing: The 1989 storm is shown at the beginning as a mysterious weather event that disrupts normal life.

Q2

Who actually killed Ms. Weiss in Mirage?

Clara Medina killed Ms. Weiss, not her husband Ángel Prieto. During the 1989 confrontation, Clara and Prieto were having an affair, and Weiss caught them together. A fight ensued, and Clara accidentally stabbed Weiss with a knife that Prieto was holding. Prieto was wrongly arrested because he was found at the scene with the murder weapon in hand, while the actual killer, Clara, escaped legal consequences for decades.

Foreshadowing: Nico sees two people in the confrontation through his window but only recognizes Prieto with the knife.

  • Clara Medina
  • Ángel Prieto
  • Hilda Weiss

  • killer
  • affair
Q3

Why does Vera's reality change after she talks to Nico?

Vera's reality changes because she successfully warns Nico to stay off the road, which prevents his fatal accident. This single action ripples through time: since Nico never died, he grows up as Inspector Leira in the new timeline, and the events that depended on his death never occur. David's relationship with Vera never forms, and their daughter Gloria never exists because the altered timeline creates a different chain of events that breaks up their family before it can begin.

Foreshadowing: Vera's earlier warning to Nico about the road is the key moment that changes everything.

Q4

What is Inspector Leira's real identity in Mirage?

Inspector Leira is actually Nico Lasarte, the boy who recorded the video in 1989. In the alternate timeline created when Vera warns Nico, he survives the car accident and grows up to become a police inspector. He has been waiting years for Vera, knowing she would eventually appear through the television during the storm. Their complicated relationship spans across timelines, with Leira having waited patiently for the opportunity to correct the past.

Foreshadowing: Leira's unusual knowledge about Nico's case and his personal investment in Vera's story hint at his true identity.

Q5

How does Vera die and come back in Mirage?

Vera sacrifices herself by committing suicide so that Leira (adult Nico) can use the TV and recorder to communicate with his younger self in 1989. Her death creates the opportunity for Leira to intervene in the past through the temporal portal. After Leira sends the message back to young Nico, Vera wakes up in a new timeline where Nico survived but her original life with David and Gloria still exists in a modified form.

Foreshadowing: Leira explains that waiting for Vera kept him from meeting her, creating a paradox she must resolve.

Q6

Why was Nico killed in the original timeline?

Nico was killed because he witnessed the murder of Ms. Weiss and tried to flee. After seeing Prieto holding the knife over Weiss's body, Nico ran to the road but was struck by a car. The driver hit him and fled, leaving Nico dying on the street. This accident conveniently removed the only witness who could have identified the real killer, leading to Prieto's wrongful arrest while Clara escaped justice.

Foreshadowing: The opening scene shows Nico filming from his window, establishing his role as the only witness.

Q7

What is the connection between Clara and the murder in Mirage?

Clara Medina was having an affair with Ángel Prieto, who was married to Hilda Weiss. When Weiss discovered the affair, a confrontation erupted in their home. During the fight, Clara stabbed Weiss with a knife that Prieto was holding. Rather than go to the police, Clara remained silent and let Prieto take the blame for the murder. She later became friends with the family who moved into Nico's house, living next to the scene of her crime for decades.

Foreshadowing: Clara's emotional reaction when hearing details about the case hints at her involvement.

Q8

How does Vera save Nico in the end of Mirage?

Vera saves Nico by convincing Leira to use the television to contact young Nico in 1989 and warn him about the car. After Vera sacrifices herself, Leira activates the portal and sends a message back in time, preventing Nico from running onto the road. This changes history: Nico survives, grows up as Leira, and the timeline shifts. In the new reality, Vera regains her life with David and Gloria, but now Nico is alive and she has the opportunity to forge a different future.

Foreshadowing: Vera's desperate plea to Leira to fix things and save Nico sets up this resolution.

Q9

What happened to Gloria in the alternate reality of Mirage?

Gloria never existed in the alternate timeline because the events that brought Vera and David together never occurred. When Vera warned Nico in 1989 and prevented his death, Nico grew up as Inspector Leira. This meant he never became the catalyst that originally brought Vera and David together, so their relationship never formed, and their daughter Gloria was never born. Vera wakes up in a world where David is married to someone else and has no memory of her.

Foreshadowing: The dramatic morning scene shows Vera discovering photographs and evidence that her entire life has been erased.

Q10

Why does David cheat on Vera in Mirage?

David cheats on Vera with a nurse he met during surgery, and this infidelity persists across both timelines. Vera discovers this by visiting the address Leira gives her, where she finds David living with another woman. Even after the timeline reset in the ending, David remains unfaithful, which is why Vera decides to report the body at the slaughterhouse and potentially leave David for Leira. His infidelity is a consistent character trait that survives the timeline changes.

Foreshadowing: Vera's suspicion and Leira's information about David's whereabouts hint at the affair.

  • infidelity

Q11

What role does the electrical storm play in Mirage?

The electrical storm is the mechanism that enables time communication between 1989 and 2014. The same 72-hour storm that occurred during the Berlin Wall's fall in 1989 recurs in 2014, creating the strange phenomenon where television signals bridge the two time periods. The storm's intense electrical activity somehow tears the fabric between timelines, allowing live footage to flow backward and forward through the television set in Nico's old house.

Foreshadowing: The opening scenes emphasize the unusual length and intensity of the 1989 storm.
