The Vanished

Yoon Seol-hee, a famous married chaebol, recently died, and on the day of the funeral her body was mysteriously stolen. Detective Jung-sik led the investigation and asked that Seol-hee’s husband, Park Jin-han, a professor, be present for questioning. Before meeting Jin-han, it becomes clear that he had a secret affair with a student, and he rushes away after the funeral to find comfort elsewhere.

At the police station, a string of bizarre events makes Park Jin-han suspect that his wife might still be alive. It’s revealed that long ago he studied a new form of drug that could paralyze the nervous system and cause death with no obvious evidence. This toxin could potentially be masked or countered, a detail that fuels the tension. He confides in his mistress, Hye-jin, and the two hatch a plan to poison Seol-hee so they could be together. There’s a critical flaw in this plan, a gap Jin-han believes illicit drugs might exploit to thwart the toxin’s effects.

Fearing that his possibly resurrected wife could threaten Hye-jin, Jin-han reveals the extent of his relationship. Yet more and more evidence ties Jin-han to Seol-hee’s death, leading Detective Jung-sik to suspect that Jin-han murdered his wife and stole the body to interfere with the autopsy. Even as the police chief grows furious, Jin-han persists in locating the missing body. Investigators discover a supposed house of his mistress Hye-jin that turns out to be empty, reinforcing the impression that Jin-han is stalling and searching for more time to cover his tracks. Meanwhile, Jin-han receives eerie messages from the number of the dead Seol-hee, directing him to the place where they had their secret.

After his release, Jin-han hurries to an isolated house on his property and heads into the nearby forest, where he runs into Detective Jung-sik who has been tailing him. From here, the labyrinth of secrets begins to unfold. Years earlier, Detective Jung-sik was about to be married, but his fiancée died in a car accident and her body vanished. Her sister remembers only a logo from the car, a clue that helps Jung-sik trace the company owned by Jin-han and his wife. With this lead, Jung-sik enlists the help of Hye-jin, who turns out to be the sister of Jung-sik’s girlfriend, and they plot revenge. Jung-sik eventually steals Seol-hee’s body and leaves hints that Jin-han, driven by guilt, imagines as the actions of Seol-hee herself. In the end, Jung-sik succeeds in finding the body and frames Jin-han for murder and body theft. The film closes with Jung-sik and Hye-jin driving away together, leaving the rest of the truth to linger in the air.
