The movie opens with Krishna talking to Shanti as he receives a letter, realizing he is late and must hurry to meet someone. He reaches a house and finds Gopal on his deathbed, and Gopal slips into a flashback that frames the rest of the tale.
This memory-driven narrative centers on three childhood best friends: Krishna, Radha, and Gopal, an orphan who carries a quiet longing to secure Radha’s hand. Krishna and Radha are deeply in love, while Gopal loves Radha from the shadows, nurturing a hope he can return as a stronger man to win her heart. Gopal leaves to earn money and build a future, with the aim of marrying Radha upon his return.
During his absence, Krishna and Radha’s bond deepens, and Radha becomes pregnant after a moment of closeness between them. When Gopal returns, he finds Radha still in love with Krishna but unable to voice her true feelings to him. Circumstances tilt in Gopal’s favor, and he marries Radha. Radha gives birth to a baby girl, Shanti, who is Krishna’s daughter.
Feeling guilty, Radha leaves Shanti in Gopal’s care, believing he will raise her as his own, and returns to her father’s house. Later Radha attempts suicide by river but is thwarted and placed under police supervision. Gopal learns of her whereabouts and visits Radha. She confesses that her heart belonged to Krishna and that Shanti is Krishna’s child. Overwhelmed with emotion, Gopal promises that things will be all right and begins drawing up his last acts: he names Krishna as Shanti’s guardian, and with a final letter, he declares he is leaving.
Gopal also wills all his wealth to Shanti, while presenting Radha with divorce papers, effectively freeing her to live her life as she desires. He then sets sail on a ship, leaving behind a complicated moral web and a family touched by sacred and painful truths.
In the present, the elderly Gopal lies on his bed and tells Krishna that he only wanted to meet him one last time before death. Gopal passes away soon after. Krishna later reveals to his daughter the haunting twist of the past: after Gopal’s departure, Radha disappeared into an Ashram, and a letter spoke of her death, sealing the secret of Shanti’s true paternity.
