Raja, Saif Ali Khan, and Yash Vardhan, played by Aditya Pancholi, share a deep-rooted friendship that dates back to their childhood. Despite coming from contrasting worlds—Raja hailing from a modest middle-class background and Yash enjoying wealth—they treat each other like brothers. Their bond is evident as they often engage in daring off-road racing challenges, symbolizing their adventurous spirits and unwavering loyalty.
The story takes a turn when Rani Sharma, portrayed by Kajol, enters their lives. She is the daughter of a local doctor and first crosses paths with Raja at his college. Instantly, Raja falls for her, captivated by her charm and beauty. Though Rani is initially hesitant about his advances, Raja’s persistent personality and genuine affection gradually win her over. He calls her to meet him at a dangerous cliffside, intending to confess his love. During this meeting, a heavy rainstorm ensues, complicating things further.
Coincidentally, Yash is driving by and encounters Rani seeking a ride to the cliff. He’s immediately struck by her presence. They share flirtatious moments during the drive before Yash drops her off. Rani, anxious to find out the reason for Raja’s call, rushes to meet him. When Raja confesses his love, Rani is unsure, brushing off his feelings. Feeling rejected, Raja’s emotional turmoil gets the better of him. To prove the sincerity of his love, he narrowly attempts to walk off the edge of the cliff, risking his life in a dramatic gesture.
In that instant, Rani witnesses Raja’s willingness to sacrifice himself. Touched by his devotion, she understands that his love is sincere. She intervenes at the last moment by preventing Raja from falling, and they confess their feelings for each other, deepening their bond. However, their happiness is shattered when Yash secretly observes their exchange. Consumed by jealousy and bitterness, Yash devises a sinister plan. Under the false pretense of wanting to introduce his true love to Raja, Yash lures Raja to the same cliff. As Raja shows Yash affection and trust by holding his hand and leaning off the cliff, Yash, with a malicious intent, lets go at the last second. Raja falls to his death—a tragic act that leaves Rani devastated.
Overwhelmed with grief, Rani promises Yash that she will be with Raja again and that he will never succeed in destroying their love. In her despair, she chooses to jump from the same cliff, ending her life with a resolute heart.
Many years pass, and Yash remains unmarried, living with his Dai Ma, Aruna Irani. Fate intervenes when he encounters Reshma, a talented folk dancer who bears a striking resemblance to Rani. Yash promises to help her by funding her father’s medical treatment and supporting her artistic talent. She, in turn, moves into Yash’s mansion, and soon, he becomes deeply involved in her life.
Yash then discovers Raju, who remarkably resembles Raja, shocking him to his core. While tending to Reshma and trying to win her affection, Yash notices her recalling flashes of past memories involving Rani and Raja. Reshma’s visions reveal the truth of their previous lives, but Raju does not remember anything from the past. As Yash’s desire to marry Reshma grows, he tries to suppress his feelings and even arranges for Raju to pursue his music career in Mumbai, hoping to distance him from Reshma.
Trouble erupts when Reshma uncovers Yash’s secret plans to marry her without her consent. Furthermore, she experiences vivid dreams that reveal her connection to Raja and the tragic events surrounding their past life. Overwhelmed and haunted by the truth, Reshma confesses everything to Raju, who quickly assumes she is mentally disturbed and returns her to Yash’s custody. Yet, her escape during her wedding day, armed with photographs as proof, propels the story toward its climax.
In pursuit of Reshma, Yash turns into a vengeful killer, murdering her father, Raju’s best friend, and even attempting to kill Raju by pushing his uncle in front of a train. Raju, now consumed with a desire for justice and revenge, refuses to let Reshma go. The story spirals into a gripping car chase that takes them to the same cliff where their tragic story began.
A brutal confrontation ensues, with Raju and Yash fighting fiercely. During their mortal combat, Raju once again hangs perilously from Yash’s grip, resembling their past encounter. With a mix of distraction and bravery, Raju manages to divert Yash’s focus. Yash, now hanging dangerously, is left to hang on for dear life. Raju then chooses to let go, ultimately killing Yash and avenging Raja’s death. With the villain defeated, Raju and Reshma finally unite, echoing the enduring power of love that survives through tragedy and time.
