Hortense Cumberbatch, a determined black optometrist residing in London, embarks on a heart-wrenching journey to uncover her family history after the passing of her adoptive mother. Despite warnings from public officials about the potential hardships she may face, she resolutely pursues her birth mother, unprepared for the startling revelation that her biological mother, Cynthia Purley, is white. Cynthia, who struggles to make ends meet, works tirelessly at a cardboard box factory in East London alongside her other daughter, Roxanne, a street sweeper. Their relationship is marked by tension and misunderstandings, showcasing the complex dynamics of family ties.
Cynthia’s younger brother, Maurice, finds himself entangled in domestic issues of his own with his wife, Monica. Though they live in the suburbs, the distance between them and Cynthia is both physical and emotional. Monica often exhibits a chilly demeanor, which adds strain to their marriage. Her struggles with severe menstrual cramps serve as a backdrop to their conflicts, as both sisters find themselves at odds—Monica perceives Cynthia as constantly self-pitying, while Cynthia views Monica as pretentious and greedy. The forthcoming celebration of Roxanne’s 21st birthday brings some light, but also heightens the unspoken resentments within the family.
When Maurice surprises Cynthia with a visit, he finds her on the brink of tears, lamenting his long absence from her life. He leaves her with money to help with home repairs and expresses his and Monica’s desire to host a barbecue for Roxanne’s milestone birthday. The revelation that Roxanne has a boyfriend, Paul, whom Cynthia has yet to meet, causes an explosive argument that results in Roxanne leaving in anger while her mother is left in tears.
In a pivotal turn, Hortense reaches out to Cynthia, probing into the identity of “baby Elizabeth Purley,” born in 1968. The gravity of Hortense’s inquiry strikes Cynthia with shock and distress—the reality that this young woman is her long-lost daughter. As they arrange to meet, Cynthia grapples with the unexpected truth involving Hortense’s race, leading her to suspect a mix-up in the birth records. However, as more memories surface during their encounter, Cynthia’s moment of realization unfolds, leading her to confess feelings of shame.
Their initial vulnerability transforms into a budding friendship, offering Cynthia a glimpse into a life outside her isolation. However, Roxanne begins to feel the sting of her mother’s newfound secrecy. When Cynthia decides to invite Hortense as a “mate from work” to Roxanne’s birthday, it stirs curiosity and concern.
On the day of the barbecue, although Monica attempts to be congenial, her passive-aggressive remarks do little to soothe the underlying tension between her and Cynthia. Inside the house, under the weight of expectations and secrets, the truth comes crashing down. Hortense, caught off-guard, is thrust into the revelation that Cynthia is indeed her mother, igniting wrath in Roxanne—who storms out, convinced of her mother’s drunken state. Maurice seeks to mend the rift between Roxanne and her mother, while tensions escalate further between Cynthia and Monica.
Amidst explosive emotions, Cynthia recounts her harrowing past, explaining how she fell pregnant at fifteen and was forced to relinquish her daughter. Accusations fly, and buried struggles surface, but Maurice passionately urges everyone to confront their pain rather than remain trapped in resentment. As the heart of their familial narrative unravels, Cynthia discloses the identity of Roxanne’s father, a fleeting encounter during her youth in Benidorm. Questions about Hortense’s father linger, and Cynthia’s response carries a weight of unfulfilled longing.
With time, emotions cool, and Hortense visits Cynthia and Roxanne at home. Her desire for a sister becomes evident, prompting Roxanne to entertain the idea of introducing Hortense as her half-sister, navigating through the complexities ahead. This intertwining of lives paints a vivid picture of love, loss, and the indelible bonds of family, showcasing the resilience of the human spirit in the pursuit of truth.
