Khudgarz (1987) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Khudgarz (1987), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Khudgarz unfolds around two childhood friends Amar Saxena [Jeetendra] and Bihari Sinha [Shatrughan Sinha], a stark contrast of wealth and poverty. Amar, born into affluence, falls in love with Jaya Saxena [Bhanupriya], a florist, while Bihari, from a humble background, finds affection with Lata, a laborer, and the two couples eventually marry. This setup plants the seeds of a conflict that will test loyalties, pride, and the price of ambition.

Amar’s father Brij Bhushan Saxena [Saeed Jaffrey] is a sharp, money-minded hotelier who dreams of gifting his son a gleaming five-star hotel. The land chosen for this project happens to be Bihari’s ancestral property, a detail that already hints at trouble. Bihari had resisted offers to sell, clinging to the land as a link to his roots and to his family’s history. The tension thickens when Brij Bhushan presses for the deal, and a layout is drafted in a way that favors Amar and Brij Bhushan, leaving Bihari to sign with his thumb impression and lose his heritage.

The hotel finally rises, but its opening day brings a chorus of harsh judgments. The site is labeled an eyesore by some, and Amar, influenced by the collective chatter, suggests to Bihari that he can have a new home and a hotel if he accepts the situation. Blinded by sentiment and anger over the loss of his property, Bihari lashes out, slapping Amar and severing their bond. What follows is a deeper, more dangerous betrayal that goes beyond a personal quarrel.

Sudhir [Kiran Kumar], one of Brij Bhushan’s most trusted workers, emerges as the malevolent force behind the scenes. He manipulates Brij Bhushan’s trust and secretly works to destroy Bihari’s dreams. A bulldozer sweeps through Bihari’s house and hotel, an act Sudhir attributes to Amar’s supposed drunken orders. The accusation is a calculated lie that tears at the fabric of their friendship even further, driving a wedge between the two men at a pivotal moment.

Amar, believing Sudhir’s tale, pleads for forgiveness and even offers to rebuild, hoping to mend what was broken. But Bihari remains stubborn and resolute, convinced that he must carve out his own path to surpass Amar and prove his worth on his terms. The rift widens into a battle for legitimacy, with Bihari pursuing expansion and influence through a bank loan and a calculated ascent in the hotel business.

In a bid to shore up his position, Bihari finds shelter with Bhimji Nanji Premji Batliwala, a lawyer who becomes a steady ally in his pursuit of success. The legal maneuvers are framed by the presence of Advocate Batliwala [Kader Khan], a sharp mind who helps chart Bihari’s newfound path despite the fraught loyalties roiling the two families.

As time passes, Sudhir shifts allegiances again, moving closer to Bihari while Amar discovers Sudhir’s treachery and expels him from his home. With new funds, Bihari launches his first hotel and arranges the marriage of Lalita Sinha [Sangeeta Naik], his sister, to Sudhir, a decision that links the two households in a fragile alliance. The wedding brings both families under one roof again, but it also foreshadows new conflicts tied to ambition and control.

Tragedy strikes when Jaya is injured in the course of these rearrangements. Amar rushes Jaya to the hospital, where she gives birth to their son and, tragically, dies. The loss leaves a fresh mark of sorrow on both families, even as Bihari’s own life expands with the birth of a daughter to his wife. In the midst of prosperity, Sudhir manipulates a crucial vulnerability—Bihari’s illiteracy—securing blank papers that effectively make him Bihari’s equal partner and deepen the sense of betrayal.

Meanwhile, the children of the two estranged households form a budding bond of their own. The thought of love crossing the old enmity adds a glimmer of hope, even as the adults grapple with envy, pride, and the weight of past decisions. Lata overhears a conversation revealing that the loans fueling Bihari’s ascent were backed by Amar, a truth that could redefine loyalties and reopen old wounds. She brings this revelation to Bihari, who is overwhelmed by the newfound clarity of the true source of his fortune.

This revelation sparks a reconciliation between the two former friends. Bihari goes to Amar with a tempered heart, and together they confront Sudhir, delivering a harsh but non-lethal comeuppance. The two men decide to spare Sudhir’s life because he is Lalita’s husband, choosing a path of justice rather than vengeance. In the end, the families pause their open feud, acknowledging the mistakes that shaped their fates and choosing to move forward with a cautious, shared sense of dignity and possibility.

Across its arc of ambition, loyalty, and heartbreak, Khudgarz remains a portrait of how wealth, illiteracy, manipulation, and genuine friendship collide—and how, even after devastating blows, trust and forgiveness can offer a way back to a fragile harmony.
