Thakur Suraj Singh’s household includes his wife, sons Kishore (who runs the business) with Laxmi and their children, poet Vijaykamal, and Mohan. Vijaykamal loves Sapna, forced to marry Bihari, who kills herself; he sees her death and goes mad. To avoid a mental asylum, Suraj keeps him on the terrace and hires courtesan Chand, who eases his mind but is later assaulted by Vijaykamal and abused by the family.
