Amar Saxena, a wealthy boy, befriends Bihari Sinha, a poor but ambitious child, in their shared hometown. Amar falls in love with Jaya, a florist, while Bihari loves Lata, a laborer, and both couples marry not long after. Their different worlds collide as ambition and affection pull them in opposite directions.

Brij Bhushan Saxena, Amar's father, dreams of gifting his son a five-star hotel. The land chosen for the hotel belongs to Bihari, who initially refuses to sell it. To seal the deal, an agreement is drafted that makes Amar and Brij Bhushan the sole owners, with Bihari unknowingly stamping his thumb impression.

Bihari signs the deal trusting his kin, but the arrangement costs him his ancestral land. The hotel is constructed and ready, but on its opening day the site is condemned as an unsightly blemish. The fallout destroys the friendship as money and power begin to drive a wedge between them.

Amar uncovers Sudhir's betrayal and expels him from his house. Sudhir then aligns with Bihari's faction, hoping to ride the wave of misfortune into power. The two former friends move forward with wary vigilance.

Bihari secures a bank loan and builds his first hotel, signaling a new phase of his success. His sister Lalita's marriage to Sudhir is arranged, with Amar and Jaya invited to the wedding, but Sudhir orchestrates events to keep the two couples apart.
