Shen Lian was tempted by the prospect of escaping his meager guard wages and starting a new life. Wei Zhong Xian offered him gold, and Shen Lian chose personal gain over loyalty to his fellow officers. By hiding that Wei was still alive, Shen Lian fractured the trust among the three brothers and set in motion a chain of betrayals that would have deadly consequences.
