During a Buzkashi competition with a neighboring tribe in Afghanistan, Badshah Khan [Amitabh Bachchan] falls in love with Benazir [Sridevi] and longs to marry her. Benazir agrees, but only on one condition: he must bring her the head of Habibullah, the man who killed her father. Badshah travels to India to追Habibullah, locating him in prison and breaking him out so they can return together. The relentless jailor, Ranveer Singh Sethi, pursues him, and Badshah ultimately decapitates Habibullah. When confronted, he tells Ranveer that he will return in a month to receive punishment for breaking Habibullah out. Badshah then goes back to Afghanistan, marries Benazir, and, after the deadline passes, surrenders to the jailer, addressing him as “Rajput Khan,” and is jailed for five years. While Badshah is away, his childhood friend Khuda Baksh [Danny Denzongpa] steps in as guardian for Benazir.
To avenge Habibullah’s death, Habibullah’s brother, Pasha [Kiran Kumar], kidnaps Heena, Ranveer’s daughter, and holds her for ransom to force Badshah’s return. Badshah escapes from captivity, confronts Pasha, but Inspector Aziz Mirza [Bharat Kapoor] ends up killing Ranveer Singh Sethi, leaving Badshah with the burden of a murder he didn’t intend. With Ranveer’s daughter as a pawn in Pasha’s hands, Badshah confesses to killing Ranveer and is sentenced to fifteen years. Aziz’s wife, Salma [Anjana Mumtaz], who has always seen Badshah as a brother, visits him and ends up killing her husband to protect Badshah, because she believes her son Raja needs his father; Badshah takes the blame for that murder as well.
Meanwhile, Benazir sends Khuda Baksh to check on Badshah. Due to his extended imprisonment, Badshah persuades Khuda Baksh to promise to care for his daughter Mehndi, and to tell Benazir that Badshah is dead so she can move on. Benazir is left devastated when news reaches her that her husband is dead. Upon his release, Badshah meets his now-grown daughter Mehndi, who has learned that her father is alive; Heena, Ranveer’s daughter and a member of the police, regards Badshah as an uncle; and Raja Mirza, Aziz Mirza’s son, has learned that it was Badshah who killed his father and remains bent on vengeance. In a surprising turn, Raja falls in love with Mehndi, even as the urge for revenge swirls in his heart.
Pasha rises to become a major crime lord, and he abducts Benazir and Khuda Baksh. The truth about Badshah’s past is revealed to Raja, who then joins forces with Badshah and Heena to take down their common enemy. In a final, cinematic confrontation, Badshah and Benazir seize Pasha’s arms as they ride on separate horses, echoing the opening scene, and hurl him off a cliff to his doom. The film ends with Badshah and Benazir riding off into the sunset, finally united.
