The royal court invites Khansaheb Aftab Hussain Bareliwale to Vishrampur to test his mettle and challenge the throne of the royal singer. Shastri enters the confrontation with skill and poise and defeats Khansaheb in a fierce contest. The Maharaja declares Shastri the royal singer, awarding him the Haveli and the legendary Katyar dagger. Khansaheb endures humiliation in front of villagers and peers.

Over the next fourteen years, Khansaheb's pride collapses as he struggles to replicate Shastri's mastery. He endures humiliation from his wife Nabila and from envious villagers who doubt his greatness. The royal lineage of singing seems to tilt away from Khansaheb.

Nabila's bitterness boils over and she poisons Shastri, leaving him unable to sing but still able to speak. The act marks a turning point that drives the story's tragedy and the erosion of Shastri's voice as a performer. The physical ailment changes the balance of power at the haveli.

With Shastri's books and Gramophone records as guides, Sadashiv begins a rigorous self-education.
