The Artist

In 1927, George Valentin, a celebrated silent film star, graces the premiere of his latest film, *A Russian Affair*. The event showcases his charisma as he basks in the attention of his fans and the media.

During the premiere, George encounters a young and ambitious woman named Peppy Miller, whom he accidentally collides with. He responds with his characteristic charm, playfully presenting her to the captivated audience.

The day after their encounter, Peppy finds herself the center of attention when she appears on the front page of *Variety*. The headline reads 'Who's That Girl?' marking the beginning of her journey in the film industry.

Driven by her ambition, Peppy auditions for a role as a dancer. She catches the eye of George Valentin, who supports her and helps her secure a spot in the next production at Kinograph Studios, despite the doubts of studio head Al Zimmer.

As rehearsals progress, George mentors Peppy, and their chemistry shines through. He marks a beauty spot on her face, which she adopts as her signature, symbolizing their deepening connection.

The tides turn when Al Zimmer announces the end of silent films at Kinograph Studios. George remains in denial about the rise of sound films, convinced that they are merely a fad.

In a vivid dream sequence, George begins to hear sounds but cannot speak. The distress of this dream indicates his fear of losing his place in the evolving film industry and awakens him in anguish.

Determined to stay relevant, George decides to finance his own silent film. Ironically, it premieres at the same time as Peppy’s new sound film, coinciding with the catastrophic stock market crash of 1929.

As audiences flock to Peppy’s sound film, George's aspirations begin to falter. He faces financial ruin, ultimately leading to the estrangement from his wife, Doris.

In his despair, George is forced to auction off his treasured belongings and dismiss his loyal valet, Clifton. This marks a low point in his once-glamorous life, showcasing his tragic downfall.

In a fit of self-destructive rage, George destroys his film collection, inadvertently starting a fire in his home. He narrowly escapes the flames, thanks to the bravery of his devoted dog.

After his hospitalization, Peppy visits George and takes him to recover at her home. Their reunion rekindles memories of their shared past and leads to a complicated emotional exchange.

Peppy insists on having George co-star in her next project, threatening to leave Kinograph if Al Zimmer refuses. Unbeknownst to George, Peppy secretly purchased his auctioned belongings to support him.

On the brink of giving up, George contemplates suicide. However, Peppy’s timely return brings a flicker of hope, reigniting his passion for filmmaking and collaboration.

As production begins on Peppy's new musical film, George delivers his first spoken line, 'With pleasure!' This moment marks their renewed partnership and the dawn of a new chapter in their lives.
