As the Fugue String quartet nears its 25th anniversary, the sudden onset of a debilitating illness strikes cellist Peter Mitchell, prompting the ensemble to reflect on their intricate relationships. After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Peter reveals his intention to bow out gracefully by performing one last concert before his retirement.
In the meantime, the second violinist Robert vocalizes his wish to step into the role traditionally held by first violinist Daniel. Robert’s ambition creates tension in his marriage with Juliette, the group’s dedicated viola player, especially after he learns that she does not support his desire for a change. In a moment of weakness, Robert succumbs to temptation, resulting in a fleeting affair. When Juliette discovers this betrayal, she kicks him out of their home, deepening their rift.
As if the situation couldn’t get more complicated, their daughter Alexandra (played by Imogen Poots) begins a tumultuous relationship with Daniel, the very man her mother once had feelings for. When Juliette informs Robert about this new development, he retaliates by confronting Daniel with violence, leading to an ultimatum from Peter, who threatens to cancel the much-anticipated concert.
The farewells culminate in a poignant performance as they take the stage for Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14. However, just when the music begins to swell, Peter makes the difficult choice to step back and is replaced by Nina, another highly skilled cellist, marking a bittersweet end to a rich chapter in their lives.
