The Artist

In 1927, the glamorous world of silent films shines brightly as George Valentin, a renowned star, enjoys the spotlight at the premiere of his latest film, A Russian Affair. His evening takes an unexpected turn when a young and ambitious woman, Peppy Miller, accidentally collides with him. Valentin responds with his signature charm and humor, playfully showcasing Peppy to the gathered crowd. The next day, she captures the attention of the public, finding herself on the front page of Variety under the headline “Who’s That Girl?”

Driven by ambition, Peppy auditions to become a dancer, where she catches the eye of Valentin, who champions her entry into the next production at Kinograph Studios, despite the skepticism of studio head Al Zimmer. Their chemistry flourishes during rehearsals, as Valentin mentors Peppy, even marking a beauty spot on her face that soon becomes her signature. As time passes, Peppy climbs the industry ladder, snagging lead roles and leaving her mark on the film world.

However, the winds of change blow harshly when Zimmer declares the end of silent films at Kinograph Studios. Remaining obstinate, Valentin dismisses the possibility of sound films, believing it to be a mere phase. Within a vivid dream, he starts hearing sounds but cannot voice any himself, waking in distress. Determined to remain relevant, he decides to finance his own silent film. Ironically, it premieres on the same day as Peppy’s latest sound production and coincides with the catastrophic 1929 Stock Market Crash. As audiences flock to Peppy’s film, Valentin’s aspirations evaporate, leading to his financial ruin and ultimately being abandoned by his wife Doris. He finds solace only with his loyal dog and valet, Clifton.

Facing despair, Valentin is compelled to auction his cherished possessions and dismiss Clifton. In a fit of drunken rage, he destroys his film collection, leading to a catastrophic fire from which he barely escapes, thanks to his dog’s brave interventions. After being rescued and placed in the hospital, Peppy visits him and arranges for his recovery at her home. Upon awakening, Valentin finds Clifton now working for Peppy, igniting feelings of helplessness and nostalgia.

Peppy is adamant about having Valentin co-star in her upcoming project, threatening to leave Kinograph unless Zimmer agrees. Unbeknownst to Valentin, it is Peppy who had purchased his auctioned belongings, embodying the essence of their shared journey. Desperate and on the brink of despair, Valentin contemplates suicide, but Peppy’s timely arrival rekindles hope. Together, they work to persuade Zimmer to create a musical, confident in Valentin’s exceptional dancing talents.

As production begins, sound becomes a striking element when they film a dance scene where the only words spoken are Valentin’s heartfelt, “With pleasure!” The film crew buzzes with excitement as the camera pulls back, capturing the vibrant atmosphere of creativity and renewal, marking a new chapter in both their lives.
