The film presents Jean-Claude Van Damme as an actor experiencing a significant low point in his career. Struggling financially, he finds his agent unable to secure any viable opportunities, and during a custody battle, the judge appears biased towards granting custody of his daughter to his ex-wife. In an effort to regain control over his life, he returns to Brussels, Belgium, his hometown, where he remains revered as a national hero.
In a twist of fate, while visiting a post office to collect a wire transfer, he becomes ensnared in a hostage crisis. A tragic misunderstanding leads the police to mistakenly believe that Van Damme is instigating the situation. As the storyline unfolds from various angles, he unexpectedly evolves into a reluctant hero, striving to safeguard the hostages while also juggling the roles of negotiator and suspected criminal.
A particularly memorable moment occurs when Van Damme is lifted above the set, delivering a profound six-minute monologue in a single take. He breaks the fourth wall, directly engaging the audience, as he shares a heartfelt yet somewhat cryptic reflection on his career, personal struggles, multiple marriages, and battles with substance abuse.
In a thrilling turn of events, Van Damme successfully convinces one of the robbers to free the hostages, but chaos ensues, resulting in the orchestrator of the heist being shot. The police respond swiftly to the sound of gunfire, leading to a tense standoff. Another thief is shot, and Van Damme finds himself at gunpoint with the last remaining robber. While he envisions a heroic martial arts maneuver, reality hits, and he resorts to elbowing the robber, allowing the police to apprehend him.
Subsequently, he faces charges of extortion for demanding $465,000 from the law firm handling his custody case, posing as the criminal mastermind, which leads to a one-year prison sentence. The story closes with him finding solace in teaching karate to fellow inmates, culminating in a poignant visit from his mother and daughter, leaving a glimmer of hope for his redemption.
