Police Commissioner Suryadev Singh [Amrish Puri] looks after his granddaughter Kajal [Twinkle Khanna] after her parents were poisoned by his enemies. The delicate peace of his family is threatened when his cousin Vishambar [Suresh Oberoi] hatches a plan to bring him down, driven by a long-standing feud over property in Sundernagar and a grudge that smells of old family wounds. Vishambar plots to ruin Suryadev, aided by his wife and brother-in-law Bhanwari [Shakti Kapoor], because Vishambar’s late father left behind a village and a fortune that he believes should have come to him.

In a bid to strike at Suryadev, Vishambar hires Karan [Ajay Devgn], a young man who is desperate for money to treat his ailing mother [Aruna Irani] in the hospital. Karan’s motive is clear on paper, but his path diverges the moment he saves Kajal in a staged kidnapping carried out by Vishambar’s goons. The act earns Suryadev’s trust, and Kajal is soon sent away to relatives in the countryside with Karan acting as her bodyguard, a role that places him in the position of protector more than would-be assassin.

As Kajal and Karan spend time together, a slow-burning attraction develops. Kajal falls for the enigmatic protector, and though Karan initially resists this new emotion, the allure of Kajal’s faith and courage begins to break down his own guarded resolve. Their evolving relationship unfolds against a backdrop of comic relief provided by Damru [Johnny Lever] and his girlfriend, whose lighthearted acts pepper the tension with moments of laughter and levity, offering a welcome balance to the high-stakes drama.

Vishambar learns that Karan has fallen for Kajal and responds with a ruthless move: he hires Dilavar to eliminate both of them. Kajal is kidnapped once more, and in a tense showdown, Karan tracks them down, rescues Kajal, and eliminates Dilavar, cementing his willingness to protect her at any cost. But the danger is not over. Suryadev discovers a revealing note left by Karan for Kajal—written before his feelings for her grew—detailing his original mission. The note is found in his room, a document Kajal never reads, and it unlocks a new layer of truth for Suryadev, who must weigh loyalty against justice and the possibility of a future for Kajal with the man she loves.

The lovers are eventually apprehended, and Karan endures torture rather than betray the person who hired him. He refuses to disclose the mastermind behind his initial mission, fearing for his mother’s safety. To secure Kajal’s future, Suryadev arranges for her marriage to Rohit [Vivek Mushran], a plan that Kajal accepts only if Karan is released. The consequences ripple through the household: Karan’s mother and Rohit are kidnapped by Bhanwari, forcing Karan to choose between family and the woman he loves.

Karan arrives at the wedding scene with Rohit, insisting that Rohit marry Kajal, despite the mounting pressure. In a critical twist, a dying Bhanwari reveals the truth to Vishambar, fueling a furious rage that erupts in a hail of bullets as Rohit’s wedding proceeds. Karan, however, fights back and kills Vishambar, thwarting the coup and saving Kajal from a destiny shaped by vengeance. As the police close in and take Karan away, Suryadev promises him a quick return from prison and a hopeful future married life with Kajal, leaving the door open to a complicated but hopeful resolution for the couple.

In this tale of loyalty, love, and conflicting loyalties, the film balances family duty with personal desire, delivering both emotional beats and action-driven turns. The performances, led by Ajay Devgn as Karan and Twinkle Khanna as Kajal, are framed by the strong supporting cast that includes Amrish Puri as the relentless commissioner and Suresh Oberoi as the vengeful Vishambar, with Shakti Kapoor providing the sharp-edged humor of Bhanwari and Johnny Lever delivering comic relief that lightens the heavier moments.
