Shankar Verma, Mithun Chakraborty, lives a modest, hard‑scrabble life with his mother Shanti after his father Satpal Verma died many years ago. Before Satpal's death he was involved with a courtesan named Meenabai, a figure whose shadow lingers over Shankar's present. Now he finds himself caught between the affections of two women: Sunita, Moon Moon Sen, a wealthy daughter of Thakur Bhanupratap Singh; and Madhu, Mandakini, a poor girl living with her parents Hariya and Tara, each believing Shankar is hers alone. To complicate matters, Amita, a powerful patron, hires him to spy on the Thakur's household—on Bhanupratap, his sons Balram and Jackie, and his associate Kedar—and Shankar takes a job as a driver in that house, reporting his findings back to Amita.

During his rounds among villagers, Shankar uncovers a troubling past: his father earned a notorious reputation for betrayal and for killing the Thakur's younger brother, Shashipratap. His investigations lead him to the Central Jail, where the jail superintendent reveals a startling twist: Satpal Verma had been deemed to have served his life sentence, was released, and had died only six months earlier at the brothel run by Meenabai. This revelation shocks Shankar and his mother Shanti, who had long believed his father had died many years earlier.

Anxious to uncover the full truth, Shankar sets out to locate Meenabai. He discovers her brothel was destroyed by fire, leaving her whereabouts unknown. Yet the true twist remains: Meenabai is alive, living under a new guise as Amita, and she uses Shankar as a pawn to exact vengeance against Bhanupratap Singh.
