Deborah Chandler Clark [Ida Lupino] secretly watches as police drag a North Carolina river for her body, a tense prologue that anchors a perilous journey through memory and motive. The tale unfolds in Clarksville, a mill town that once thrived, where Deborah’s father, John Chandler [John Litel], a proud mill owner, disapproves of his daughter’s romance with Selden Clark [Stephen McNally], the mill’s brusque general manager and scion of the town’s founding family. Clark is powerful, aggressive, and deeply resented by the elder Chandler, setting up a web of personal and financial stakes that will prove deadly.

Soon, tragedy strikes at the mill when Chandler falls to his death, and Clark consoles Deborah while proposing marriage. The newlyweds retreat to a honeymoon cabin, only to be confronted by Patricia Monahan [Peggy Dow], a jealous woman who insists she has been involved with Clark and accuses him of murder and opportunistic marriage to seize the family mill. Debating the truth of these claims, Deborah removes her wedding ring and demands an annulment, torn between fear, doubt, and a growing sense that she’s stumbled into a carefully constructed trap.

That night, Deborah slips away in the couple’s car, fleeing down a steep, winding mountainside. Clark had tampered with the brakes, and the vehicle hurtles toward disaster—she leaps free just before it crashes into the river, and Clark’s flashlight-led search for her is thwarted by the dark of the night. Believing she cannot prove his guilt, Deborah heads to Raleigh to persuade Monahan to go to the police with her story, only to learn that Monahan has vanished for weeks and seems to have vanished from the path to justice as well.

Clark answers with a chilling public gambit: a $5,000 reward for the whereabouts of Deborah, whom he claims has suffered a nervous breakdown and must be committed to an asylum. A chance encounter in Raleigh introduces Deborah to Keith Ramsey [Howard Duff], an ex-soldier who becomes entangled in her peril. For Deborah, love and danger blur as Ramsey’s interest grows from protective to romantic, and she secretly bleaches her hair blonde to blend in as she assumes the alias Ann Carter, hoping to outrun a man who would profit from her fear.

Ramsey tails her, convinced his pursuit is merely circumstantial, while Deborah clings to a fragile trust in him. He intends to use the windfall to launch a boat-building business on the northern California coast, a dream he pursues with quiet urgency. They ride a route that takes them through Knoxville, Tennessee, and a tense hotel stop where a boisterous conventioneers’ crowd interferes just as Clark reappears, nearly sending Deborah over a deadly fire escape. A drunken distraction saves them, and Deborah, terrified, confides in Ramsey as he again covertly contacts Clark back in Clarksville, convinced that Deborah’s peril is a shared danger.

Believing that their bond might secure a safer future in his imagined Angel’s Cove, Ramsey and Deborah board a train together, only to be handed over to Clark, who intends to have Deborah committed. In a desperate turn, Deborah escapes and Ramsey chases after the train as the pair press on toward a fragile, uncertain safety. Back in Raleigh, Deborah reconnects with Patricia Monahan, the last hope for justice, and they arrange a meeting. But Monahan’s plan takes a grim turn when she abducts Deborah and drives her straight to the mill, where Clark lies in wait to trap his wife once more.

The chase intensifies through the mill’s catwalks, with Monahan pursuing Deborah as Clark closes in, intent on throwing her to her death just as he did Deborah’s father. In the chaos, Monahan is knocked off balance in the darkness—Clark mistakes her for Deborah and hurls her over the edge. Ramsey bursts in, and a life-or-death struggle with Clark unfolds on a narrow ledge high above the factory floor. Clark stumbles backward, topples, and is left dazed as the danger passes.

With the threat finally behind them, Deborah and Keith drive away arm in arm toward Angel’s Cove, now married for three months and shining with relief and hope.
