What Happens at the End of Impetigore?

How Impetigore (2019) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The resolution of Impetigore hinges on a subversion of the typical folk horror sacrifice. While the village elder, Ki Saptadi, insists that Maya must be killed to break the curse causing infants to be born without skin, the spirits of the three murdered girls guide her toward a different path. These spirits, who have followed Maya since the beginning, recognize her as an innocent party; her father had slaughtered the girls to harvest their skin for Maya when she was born skinless, a curse originally cast by the jealous matriarch Nyi Misni. Instead of enacting vengeance, the spirits help Maya uncover the truth. By stealing the skin puppets crafted from the girls' remains and burying them alongside their bones, Maya lays the spirits to rest, successfully ending the curse without losing her own life.

However, the film’s conclusion offers a grim twist that suggests evil is not so easily eradicated. Following the revelation of her crimes and her son’s hidden connection to Maya, Nyi Misni and Ki Saptadi take their own lives. This does not bring peace to the village. In a flash-forward one year later, a pregnant woman is attacked by the vengeful spirit of Nyi Misni, who rips the fetus from her womb and consumes it. This final scene reveals that while the specific curse of skinless infants has been lifted, Nyi Misni’s pact with dark forces remains active. Her malevolence has evolved into a new, even more visceral curse, proving that the village’s suffering is far from over and that the cycle of horror is perpetual.

Impetigore Ending: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about the ending of Impetigore (2019): what the final scene means, how the twist works, what happens to each character and how to read the ending. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Maya survive instead of being killed by the village?

Maya survives because the spirits of the three murdered girls recognize her as an innocent victim rather than a villain. The girls reveal that Maya's own father killed them to harvest their skin for Maya when she was born skinless, making Maya a victim of her father's crime rather than the culprit. Instead of seeking vengeance, the spirits guide Maya toward the truth, allowing her to break the curse through burial rather than sacrifice.

Foreshadowing: The spirits appear throughout the movie, watching Maya and subtly guiding her toward the truth.

  • maya survival
  • village sacrifice
  • innocent victim
  • spirits guide
Q2

How does Maya break the curse causing skinless infants?

Maya breaks the curse by locating the skin puppets crafted from the three murdered girls' remains and burying them alongside their bones. This act of proper burial lays the spirits to rest, finally freeing them from the desecration they suffered. The curse is lifted not through Maya's death, as the village believed, but through this act of reconciliation and respect for the dead.

  • break curse
  • skin puppets
  • burial
  • lay spirits to rest

Q3

Maya's father, a former villager, murdered three young girls to harvest their skin because Maya was born without skin, a curse cast by the jealous Nyi Misni. The girls' spirits followed Maya throughout the film, not to harm her, but because they recognized her as an innocent who had been wronged by her own father's actions. Their spirits wanted justice through proper burial, not vengeance against Maya.

Foreshadowing: Maya sees the ghostly figures of young girls multiple times throughout the movie, and they never directly attack her.

Why do Nyi Misni and Ki Saptadi kill themselves at the end?

Nyi Misni and Ki Saptadi commit suicide after their crimes are fully exposed. Nyi Misni is revealed as the originator of the original curse, she cast the skinlessness spell on baby Maya out of jealousy. Ki Saptadi had been complicit in the decades of ritual killings and kept the truth hidden. Facing exposure and the collapse of their authority, they choose death over accountability.
