In a quiet rural village in early 18th-century England, a series of disturbing events begins when farmer Ralph Gower discovers a strange, deformed skull featuring one intact eye and unusual fur growths. He shows it to the local judge, hoping for guidance, but the skull mysteriously disappears before any investigation can happen. The judge dismisses Ralph’s concerns, dismissing them as superstitions rooted in local folklore.
Parallel to this, Peter Edmonton arrives with his fiancée, Rosalind Barton, to meet his aunt, Mistress Banham, who is staying with the judge. However, both Mistress Banham and the judge disapprove of their relationship and conspire to keep Rosalind apart by having her sleep in a neglected attic room. Strange noises and terrifying screams are heard during her nights in the attic, and when she investigates, she inadvertently injures Mistress Banham, causing her to fall ill under mysterious circumstances.
Despite Peter’s protests, the judge decides Rosalind must be committed, and as she is being taken away, Peter catches a glimpse of a grotesque claw replacing her hand, hinting at something far more sinister. Meanwhile, three children playing nearby find a claw from the same creature that the skull belonged to, deepening the mystery. That night, Mistress Banham unexpectedly disappears, raising suspicions about the house’s dark energy.
In a chilling moment, Peter sneaks into the attic and encounters a creature with fur-covered claws, which attacks him. He desperately tries to defend himself with a knife, but the encounter ends with Peter having severed his own hand. The judge, skeptical about supernatural explanations, researches witchcraft in a book, trying to understand the bizarre occurrences. Not long after, he leaves for London, leaving Squire Middleton, a pompous but slow-witted figure, in charge. The judge promises to return, but the horror continues to unfold.
The mystery escalates when a young boy named Mark is lured away from his classes by classmates playing truant. They lead him to an abandoned churchyard where they engage in a ritualistic game that ends tragically when Mark’s body is discovered hidden in the woodshed. The children, led by the troubled Angel Blake, participate in dark rituals, including a Black Mass dedicated to a demon named Behemoth, a furred beast that appears during their cult gatherings. The children’s bodies start showing patches of fur — taken from themselves to somehow restore or summon the demonic entity. During these rituals, the children commit terrible acts, including the ritualistic murder of Mark and a grisly assault on Mark’s sister, Cathy, who is dragged into the cult’s depraved ceremonies.
Ralph, meanwhile, becomes entangled further when he attempts to save a girl named Margaret, who is suspected of witchcraft, only to discover she bears a piece of the demon’s fur and is fully committed to its service. Margaret escapes but is later found and interrogated by the judge, revealing that the cult intends to complete a ritual at the ruined church to fully restore the demon’s form. Knowing the danger, the judge rallies a mob to destroy the cult and the creature itself.
The climax unfolds when Ralph, now with fur-covered legs, awakens in the dilapidated church surrounded by the members of the cult. In a trance-like state, he nearly tears off his furred skin, a harrowing moment symbolizing the struggle between the evil influence and his human nature. A fierce mob attack ensues, resulting in the death of Angel Blake and the destruction of the demonic entity by the judge wielding a sword. With the demon defeated, Ralph regains his normal state, and peace is restored to the village, but not before revealing the horrifying extent of the cult’s activities and the dark forces they worship.
This film combines elements of horror, superstitions, and Victorian-era fears of witchcraft and demonic possession, creating a tense and atmospheric story about innocence entangled with evil, and the battle to prevent darkness from consuming a community.
