Witchcraft (1964) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Witchcraft (1964), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Set in the 17th century, a long-running feud between the Whitlock and Lanier families shapes every turn of fate around the old Whitlock estate. The bitter memory of Vanessa Whitlock, accused of witchcraft and buried alive, haunts both sides for generations, casting a shadow that refuses to fade. Vanessa Whitlock Yvette Rees becomes the spark that keeps the feud alive, a reminder of a crime the families never fully reconciled, and the living carry that grudge into the present.

Two young descendants, Amy Whitlock Diane Clare and Todd Lanier David Weston, dare to fall in love despite the stern objections of Amy’s uncle, Morgan Whitlock Lon Chaney Jr.. Their romance offers a fragile glimpse of hope amid the oldest of feuds, yet it also draws the family into a dangerous collision of loyalties. The couple’s bond challenges the rigid boundaries laid down by Morgan, who watches with wary suspicion as the younger generation tests the boundaries of tradition.

On the Lanier side, ambitious plans to renovate and transform the aging Whitlock estate push forward. Bill Lanier Jack Hedley and his brother Todd push ahead with development, unaware that their project treads on a graveyard of memories. Myles Forrester Barry Linehan, their business partner, orders his workers to bulldoze through the old Whitlock Cemetery, provoking a furious response from the Whitlocks. From an exhumed grave rises Vanessa Whitlock, a figure thought to be lost to time, and the Whitlock coven—led by Morgan Lon Chaney Jr.—welcomes her return with ritual gravity. The coven’s hex powers begin to unravel lives, with mysterious deaths striking Myles Forrester and others close to the families. An Inspector Baldwin Victor Brooks is assigned to the case, digging into the strange killings and the resurrected menace, while the Whitlock matriarch Malvina Lanier Marie Ney and others watch the tragedy unfold with growing fear. The momentum of vengeance intensifies as Hel en Lanier Viola Keats and the family circle feel the tremors of the curse, and Morgan finds his grip on the situation slipping.

Morgan is arrested as the investigations press forward, and Amy is taken in by her uncle during the turmoil. The crisis deepens as more incidents threaten Bill, Todd, and their grandmother Malvina, drawing Tracy Lanier Jill Dixon into the orbit of danger. The ancient feud seems poised to erupt again with explosive force, and the living must navigate a web of fear, loyalty, and long-buried magic.

When Bill and Todd are away on business, Tracy follows Amy into the Whitlock family crypt near the old mansion, now the Lanier residence. Inside a hidden chamber, Tracy witnesses the coven perform rites that include sacrificing an infant, a sight that steels her resolve even as she fights for her life. She is captured and bound, put in danger as the ritual gears turn toward a catastrophic finale. Bill and Todd rush to find Tracy, breaking into the crypt and rescuing her, but Todd is drawn back toward Amy, who remains intimately tied to the dark rites. As Uncle Morgan confrontation nears a breaking point, Amy is driven to her limit and topples a colossal brazier, unleashing a blazing catastrophe that consumes Vanessa and the entire chamber. The inferno spreads at once through the crypt and into the adjacent mansion, turning a haunted relic into a furnace of ash. Todd reaches for Amy, only to watch as the fire consumes everything they ever knew.

Outside, a broken Todd joins his family in the wake of the catastrophe, staring as the Whitlock estate burns to the ground. The once-immortal feud that bound the two families for centuries finally ends, not with triumph, but with ruin, as the flames mark a somber, irreversible end to a generations-long conflict.
