Walter Williams is a formidable power broker in San Francisco, a man whose wealth and influence let him steer boardrooms and budgets with quiet confidence. His life seems flawless: a devoted wife, Irene Williams, and a controlled, almost pristine world where every detail serves the greater plan.
On a Denver business trip, Williams invites her along to a scenic ride toward Lake Tahoe, turning the journey into a mini-vacation. Irene fabricates a reason to bring along a supposed cousin—their cover for her secret lover, Jim Torrence.
At a lonely turnout in the Sierra, Torrence and Irene execute the murder: Torrence strikes Williams with a lug wrench, then rolls the body down a steep embankment. The incident is complicated when two moving-van attendants stop to help, causing Torrence to flee in Williams’s roadster. A frantic head-on collision with a gasoline tanker follows.
Irene Williams heads to Oakland to rendezvous with Torrence at a hotel under the alias ‘Mr. & Mrs. Jack Burns,’ but Torrence never appears. Williams, meanwhile, is left bloodied but alive, managing to cling to the open tailgate of a moving van and later crawling away after the van departs.
The next morning, a newspaper reports Williams’s death, and he makes his way to Larkspur, Idaho, where he finds work as a mechanic at a service station owned by Marsha Peters, a young war widow.
In San Francisco, detective Quincy begins to assemble evidence against Irene, who is arrested as an accomplice and faces the possibility of the death penalty.
Walt settles into life in Larkspur, living as a boarder with Marsha and her mother, watching the case unfold from afar. Months pass as he weighs his options and grows closer to Marsha, who urges him to confront the truth rather than hide behind amnesia.
Marsha’s kindness finally persuades him to return and clear Irene, but Irene proves to be a master of manipulation, turning the story so that Walt appears to have plotted the entire scheme to kill both Irene and Torrence.
With the district attorney questioning Walt’s apparent amnesia and his long absence, the case seems to tilt in Irene’s favor when clippings from Irene’s trial surface in Walt’s room in Larkspur.
Everything shifts when Su Lin, the Williams’ former housekeeper, is located. Her discovery of a hotel key Irene left in a jacket pocket leads investigators to Torrence’s suitcase still checked at the Oakland hotel, exposing the Jack Burns alias and linking Torrence directly to Irene.
Armed with these revelations, Walt is finally freed and Irene is rearrested, and the balance between truth and deception is restored in a case built on ambition, betrayal, and a stubborn desire for justice.
