Gopalan M G Soman runs a local cane wholesale operation, buying canes from workers and selling them at a premium, but the ledger hides a darker truth: sandalwood smuggling hides within the cane trade. Varuthunni Madhu leads the workers with a reputation for honesty, earning the loyalty of his team, who look to him as a fair and steadfast figure. Ramu Kamal Haasan is Varuthunni’s adopted son, and he harbors deep feelings for Sreedevi Seema, Narayanan’s daughter and a fellow worker of Varuthunni. Narayanan, a co-worker of Varuthunni, is played by Jose Prakash, and his presence weighs on the growing tension in the camp. Annamma Sheela is a widow who also harbors affection for Ramu, complicating loyalties within this tight-knit community.
When Gopalan is caught in sandalwood smuggling, he escapes punishment by pinning the blame on Varuthunni, turning the workers’ trust away from their leader and pushing the two men toward an open clash. The rift among the cane workers widens as more people align with Varuthunni’s honest stance, and they decide to supply cane only to him. This strikes a painful blow to Gopalan’s business and his standing with his boss, intensifying the pressure he faces. Amid the rising conflict, Annamma draws closer to Ramu, and the two become intimately involved, further entangling the fates of everyone nearby.
Gopalan’s enforcers escalate the feud by destroying Varuthunni’s cane stacks, turning the conflict into a direct threat to the livelihoods of the workers. In response, Gopalan hatches a plan to eliminate Varuthunni, a plot that is ultimately uncovered by a feverish Ramu through information from Varuthunni’s ally. At the same time, Annamma reveals that she is pregnant, a revelation that deepens the emotional stakes for all involved.
Overwhelmed and torn, Ramu roams in search of his father to shield him from the deadly plot, but he is beaten by Gopalan’s gang before he can be warned. He eventually locates Varuthunni, but the danger reaches a peak when Gopalan shoots Varuthunni—only for the bullet to strike Ramu as he dives to shield his father. In a final, devastating turn, Varuthunni kills Gopalan, and Ramu dies in his arms. With his last breath, Ramu pleads for his father to care for the child Annamma carries, leaving Varuthunni to mourn beside the infant and bear the weight of broken dreams and ruined hopes.
