During a camping trip in Florida, young Violet Hansen encounters Rose The Hat, a mysterious woman performing magic tricks by the lake. Violet is charmed by her and notices other lurking figures watching from nearby, setting the stage for the dark cult's interest in her. This moment introduces the connection between Violet and the sinister group known as the True Knot.

Danny Torrance struggles with PTSD from his childhood at the Overlook Hotel, experiencing nightmares and haunted by spirits like the Grady Twins and the Woman in Room 237. His psychic abilities, or 'shine', allow him to see and trap spirits, showing early signs of his powers. His mother, Wendy, becomes increasingly worried about his silence and nightmares.

While alone, Danny encounters the Woman in Room 237 and uses his telepathic powers to trap her inside a mental box, alleviating some of his fears. This act marks his attempt to control his psychic abilities and confront his traumatic memories. It signifies his ongoing struggle with the spirits from his past.

In 2011, adult Dan is depicted as an alcoholic living in New Jersey. He gets into a violent bar fight and later feeling uneasy about his lifestyle, reconnects with a woman from the bar. His struggles with addiction and regret highlight his ongoing battle with his past and personal demons.

Meanwhile, in Long Island, teenager Andi is approached by cult members Rose and Crow Daddy, who recognize her psychic abilities. They manipulate her and nickname her 'Snakebite Andi'. Rose recruits her into the True Knot, a cult that feeds on the shine of psychic children to stay young and powerful.

Abra Stone celebrates her fifth birthday, demonstrating her powerful psychic ability by making spoons float and hit the table. Her parents notice her supernatural talents, foreshadowing her importance in the future conflict with the True Knot.

Dan arrives in Frazier, New Hampshire, to start anew and befriends Billy Freeman. He confesses his need to escape his past and begins working at a local hospice, where he uses his 'shine' to comfort the dying. This marks his attempt at redemption and finding peace.

Rose and the True Knot perform a ritual in which they feed on Violet’s psychic energy, notably manipulating and absorbing her shine. This event showcases their method of survival and foreshadows their pursuit of other powerful psychic children, like Abra.

One night, Dan follows the hospice cat into a room and encounters the spirit of Dick Hallorann, his deceased mentor. Hallorann warns Dan about the True Knot and urges him to protect Abra, as their powers are connected. This meeting deepens Dan’s understanding of his abilities and his destiny.

The True Knot captures and brutally murders a young baseball player, Bradley Trevor, feeding on his shine. Abra senses this and becomes distressed, sensing the boy’s death from afar. The event reveals the True Knot’s brutal methods and intensifies the stakes for Dan and Abra.

Using her powers, Abra locates the buried body of Bradley with Dan and Billy’s help. Her psychic connection allows her to identify the cult’s location, making her a target for the True Knot. This marks her emergence as a key player in the fight against the cult.

Dan and Abra arrive at the abandoned Overlook Hotel to confront Rose and the spirits trapped inside. Dan faces his trauma, and with Abra’s help, they trap Rose in the hedge maze. Abra’s powers and Dan’s connection to the hotel’s spirits culminate in a battle that frees the hotel of its malevolent influence.

As Rose overpowers Dan, he is consumed by the spirits of the hotel. To save Abra and prevent the spirits from inhabiting him, Dan sacrifices himself by igniting the boiler room, causing the Overlook’s malevolent spirits and Rose to be destroyed in the explosion. This act provides a final redemption for Dan.

Sometime after the events, Abra maintains a psychic connection with Dan’s spirit, indicating her ongoing relationship with her 'imaginary friend'. She demonstrates her growing mastery of her powers and readiness to face future threats, showing her evolution as a powerful psychic.

At the movie's end, Abra prepares for a final encounter with the Woman in the Bathroom, who appears waiting for her. Knowing her powers, Abra is already one step ahead, foreshadowing her potential future battles with the spirits and the cult, and her emerging role as the protector of her own destiny.
