The Haunting of Helena

Sophia is a recently divorced college professor who lives in Italy with her daughter, Helena. On the day a car accident shatters their routine, Helena also loses her first tooth, and soon she starts reporting unsettling visions to her mother. As Sophia digs into the history of the apartment they share, she uncovers a dark past from Fascist Italy: the former resident brutalized his wife by removing her teeth and locking her in a closet to die. Helena begins speaking to an invisible presence in that closet, and she grows fixated on teeth, insisting she must give them to The Fairy. A teacher from Helena’s school becomes entangled in the mystery and is tragically killed by a swarm of mosquitoes, a grim clue that the violence may be tied to the apartment itself.

An ominous warning from the elderly man who lives upstairs is ignored, and the family is soon attacked by the same malevolent force: a toothless ghost from the woman’s tragic past. Sophia and Helena manage to escape in the chaos, but the danger remains as the ghost intensifies its hold, stalking them through the crumbling rooms as teeth rain down and the closet seems to appear in new places. The threat escalates when Helena’s father—who has since returned to Italy—finds himself caught in the nightmare, only to be killed by a swarm of mosquitoes after opening a door that shouldn’t exist.

As the intensity deepens, doctors at the institution where Helena is placed question Sophia’s fitness as a parent. The pressure grows sharper when Patrick, her dead ex-husband, is connected to a disturbing clue—the bloody teeth found in Helena’s locker—forcing Sophia to confront memories she’d rather forget. Her visions become more urgent, and she begins to glimpse the figure of the killer standing at the window of the abandoned psychiatric wing, urging her to uncover the truth.

Guided by fragments of the past, Sophia tracks down the murderer’s file and unearths the hidden stash of the dead woman’s teeth. When the closet door finally reappears, she hurls the teeth inside in a desperate bid to placate the restless spirit. Helena’s voice returns, signaling a possible end to the haunting—yet a chilling revelation unfolds when they watch a recorded interview: the deceased wife was a serial killer who preyed on children, and her husband killed her to stop her reign of horror. An elderly man who warned Sophia long ago had witnessed the truth as a child, and now the danger surges back through the halls as a patient with a maimed face confirms that the ogre has Sophia’s teeth once more.

In the wake of this truth, Sophia flees through the institution’s corridors, but the danger lingers. She finally reaches Helena’s room, steps inside, and then recoils, collapsing in horror as the echo of the past closes in. Some time later, Sophia herself becomes a patient at the same institution. She sits on a bench, gazing up at the abandoned wing, where Helena’s ghost now stands at the window alongside the dead woman’s husband, their figures trapped together with half of the victim’s face missing, a haunting image that lingers long after the credits. The story threads a tense meditation on memory, guilt, and the ways a single place can house multiple generations of fear, leaving the living to weigh what it means to survive something that refuses to stay buried.
