The Mystery of Marie Roget

In 1889 Paris, the disappearance of Marie Roget Maria Montez hangs over the city as a tense mystery. A police inspector, Gobelin Raymond Bailey, leads the case, but he finds his authority challenged by the French Minister for Naval Affairs, Henri Beauvais John Litel, a friend of Marie’s grandmother, Madame Cecile Roget Maria Ouspenskaya and her younger sister Camille Roget Nell O’Day. Beauvais, not content with the investigation, tries to steer the inquiry away from trouble and even threatens to remove Gobelin from the case, setting the stage for a clash-of-will between power and procedure. To counter this, Gobelin enlists medical officer Dr. Paul Dupin Patric Knowles, a figure whose calm, methodical approach promises a deeper probe into the strange events surrounding Marie and her family.

When a dead woman’s body is found in the river, its face is mutilated enough to hint at a grim mystery, and Beauvais quickly asserts that the corpse is Marie. Yet before long, Marie herself reappears, stubbornly refusing to reveal where she has been. The family’s other relationships entangle the case: Camille becomes engaged to Marcel Vigneaux Edward Norris, who is secretly Marie’s lover, and the two are entangled in a plot that seems intended to murder Camille to secure an inheritance. Cecile Roget, worried for Camille’s safety, asks Dupin to accompany Camille to a social party, hoping to keep her out of danger while the truth is sought. At the party, the air crackles with tension as Beauvais confronts Marie about her affair with Marcel, a confrontation that pushes the lovers toward a dangerous precipice.

Marie vanishes again, and a second faceless body turns up, deepening the sense of peril. Dupin takes a perilous step by sneaking into the morgue to remove the brain from this second body, a bold act that allows him to identify it as Marie and push the investigation toward a more clinical, forensic path. Back at the Roget house, Cecile warns Camille about Marie’s supposed plan to kill her, a revelation that amplifies the suspicion and fear already in play. Marcel confesses to killing Marie, but insists he did so to protect Camille, a motive that complicates the moral landscape of the case. Beauvais, pressing for exoneration, demands that charges against Marcel be dropped, and Dupin agrees to this controversial decision, though not without lingering questions.

The tension escalates when Marcel challenges Dupin to a duel, a test of wits and nerve that mirrors the duel of motives plaguing everyone involved. In a sharp turn of information, Gobelin learns from Scotland Yard that the first dead body belonged to Marcel’s English wife, who had recently traveled to Paris to pursue her husband, complicating the web of alibis and loyalties. As Dupin and Gobelin follow the thread, they discover that Beauvais and Marcel have vanished, and Dupin’s clever manipulation of facts—accusing Camille of possessing Marie’s diary, a diary that does not exist—has drawn out the killer. They race to the Roget residence, arriving just as Marcel is about to strike Camille.

In a climactic confrontation, Gobelin shoots Marcel, ending the immediate threat. Yet the final twist emerges as Gobelin uncovers a hidden layer: Beauvais has been secretly aiding Dupin all along, a revelation that reframes the entire investigation and leaves open questions about motive, power, and the true extent of complicity within Paris’s corridors of influence.
