The 19th-century zamindar Kalikinkar Roy lives in a spacious rural Bengal mansion with his family. After a village festival, Umaprasad leaves to Calcutta to continue his schooling, including English, while Doyamoyee stays behind to help care for Khoka and assist Kalikinkar. The household's routine centers on devotion to Kali and the rituals that bind them together.

Kalikinkar dreams Kali and Doyamoyee unite

Kalikinkar dreams that Kali's eyes merge with Doyamoyee's, which he takes as a sign that she is an incarnation of the goddess. He wakes Doyamoyee and falls to her feet in reverence, followed by Taraprasad's similar response while Harasundari remains skeptical. The dream sets the stage for a crisis of faith in the family.

Beggar's grandson and a sign of divinity

A local beggar brings his unconscious grandson to Doyamoyee in hope of a miracle. Kalikinkar suggests giving the boy charanamrito, and the moment becomes a test of belief for the family. Umaprasad arrives during the process and privately argues with his father, while the boy opens his eyes, which Kalikinkar takes as proof of Doyamoyee's divinity.

That night, Umaprasad sneaks into Doyamoyee's room and asks her to leave with him. They reach the riverbank where a boat waits, but Doyamoyee hesitates and begs to return home. Reluctantly, Umaprasad returns to Calcutta alone.

News of the supposed miracle spreads, and supplicants travel from afar to worship Doyamoyee. She remains stoic during ceremonies, while the growing crowd emphasizes her sacred status, and Khoka begins avoiding her.

Khoka falls ill; healing attempt leads to tragedy

Khoka develops a high fever and a doctor is summoned. Harasundari and Kalikinkar decide to have Doyamoyee hold Khoka and touch him with charanamrito to heal him, despite doubts. The plan is risky, and Khoka dies the following morning.

Confrontation and realization of the burden

Umaprasad returns to find Kalikinkar weeping before the Kali statue and accuses his father of killing Khoka through blind faith. He vows to spare his wife the crushing burden of divinity, but then discovers Doyamoyee dressing for a wedding, suggesting they must flee together.
