Devi Putrudu (2001) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Devi Putrudu (2001), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

The film opens with a legend of the sea swallowing the ancient city of Dwaraka, a cataclysm that still lingers as a thread pulling the present into a centuries‑old mystery. In modern Mumbai, Baburao, a street-smart petty thief who survives on pranks and quick getaways, moves through a world of small-time schemes and sly tricks. His routine shifts when a foreign-returned visitor named Satyavati arrives to see her sister, Karuna, who lives near the Dwaraka excavation with her archaeologist husband. The pair are accompanied by Satyavati’s uncle, Peddagaddala Peraiah, and together they hire a taxi that Baburao drives, initially mistaking Satyavati for someone who might be carrying valuable diamonds. Realizing his mistake, Baburao contemplates abandoning the group, but the pull of circumstance drags him along toward the fabled coast.

As they reach the ruined shores, Baburao finds himself entangled in a web of danger and wonder. In Dwaraka, he barely escapes a run‑in with a rough crowd and then meets a mystical young girl named Paapa, whose powers glow as she speaks in riddles about fate and love. Paapa’s guidance pushes Baburao toward a confession of his growing feelings for Satyavati, even as she confides that her sister Karuna has vanished, sparking a personal stake for Baburao in the search. The arresting strangeness of Paapa’s visions and the eerie atmosphere of Karuna’s disappearance set the stage for a deeper history that will be revealed in a flashback.

The tale then slips into a vivid alt‑timeline: Balaram, an atheist archaeologist who trusts science above faith, loves Karuna and marries her. While studying near Dwaraka, he becomes obsessed with a recurring sea phenomenon that occurs every Mahalaya Amavasya, a rhythmic torque that seems to awaken an ancient power. Driven by curiosity, Balaram dives into the sea during one such event and retrieves an ancient metal box marked with a Trisulam. A shadowy cadre of foreign mercenaries, led by a ruthless figure, seeks the box’s mystic force to tilt the balance of the world. The mercenaries capture Balaram and Karuna, torturing them to reveal the box’s hidden coordinates. Balaram manages to reclaim the box, but in a chaotic moment the box slips from his grasp and disappears into a cave.

Backstabbing and trust fracture as a friend, Har Gopal, betrays Balaram to the mercenaries. Balaram fights to protect Karuna and return the box to safety, but he is killed in the confrontation, his final instructions guiding Karuna to the box’s true resting place. In the present, Baburao vows to avenge Balaram’s death and to rescue Karuna from their foreign pursuers. With the help of Paapa, he traces the cave where the box fell, and a climactic clash unfolds as the mercenaries try to flee with the relic.

As the box finally opens, a fierce goddess emerges, wielding power that wipes out the mercenaries and their followers before retreating back to the box’s rightful cradle. The battle leaves Baburao and the others to seal the relic away once more, restoring a fragile balance to the world. Yet the story doesn’t end with triumph alone; the bottle holding Paapa is recovered by a stray dog named Striker, and Paapa’s spirit begins its ascent to the afterlife. In the final moments, Baburao and Satyavati celebrate the birth of their child, who bears a birthmark identical to Paapa’s, a quiet, symbolic thread tying the present to the ancient mystery that began so long ago.
