In a sprawling 19th‑century Bengali manor, the rhythms of daily life are inseparable from the cadence of prayer. The estate’s rooms echo with the scent of incense, the soft toll of bells, and the ever‑present reverence for the goddess Kali. Within these walls, tradition is both comfort and constraint, shaping the world of a family whose very identity is tied to ritual and duty.

Kal​ikinkar Roy is the patriarch, a widowed zamindar whose devotion to Kali governs his decisions and his control over the household. He shares his home with his elder son Taraprasad and his gentle wife Harasundari, along with their young son Khoka. The younger son, Umaprasad, has returned from Calcutta, bringing with him an education and a glimpse of a modern world that feels at odds with his father’s strict piety. When Umaprasad’s wife Doyamoyee arrives, she brings a quiet presence that soon becomes the focus of the family’s worship after a striking vision convinces Kalikinkar she may embody the divine.

The film breathes with a measured, almost ceremonial pace, letting the lush Bengal landscape and the muted clangor of ritual objects create an atmosphere of both awe and unease. As the household slowly reorients itself around Doyamoyee’s perceived sanctity, subtle tensions arise between reverence and doubt, tradition and emerging ideas.
